Men urged to take advantage of free prostate cancer screening

first_img Share All male adults over the age of forty (40) in the Marigot district are being asked to participate in a free cancer screening organized by the Dominica Cancer Society today Saturday 23rd June, 2012.The Dominica Cancer Society has embarked on a prostate cancer awareness campaign in collaboration with the Ross University School of Medicine in Portsmouth. They have held screenings in Roseau and Portsmouth and have decided to branch out to other districts to give as many people as possible an opportunity for screening. This is in keeping with the Society’s mandate, in reaching out to people and getting them to understand that “early detection can save lives”.A press release issued by the Cancer Society earlier this week indicates that the campaign “will serve the residents of the northeast; however it is open to men from outside the district. The Society is encouraging men of the northeast to come and take advantage of this opportunity”.The screening activities will commence at 9 o’clock in the morning at the Marigot Hospital will include “Digital rectal examinations” along with relevant medical check-ups. “Men will be seen on a first come first serve basis by the doctors and medical students hope to continue through the afternoon until they have managed to screen all those who attend. There will be a choice of genders of medical students. At the end of the examination a report will be given to the attendee with recommendations for his Doctor to take appropriate action, if any”.The Society has made a special appeal to be proactive regarding their prostate health and men to take advantage of the free screenings.“Men are reminded of their tendency to be very irregular when it comes to their medical care and therefore, by the time a man experiences symptoms and gets checked it can be too late”.The free screening is open to men over the age of forty (40) to take advantage of this opportunity to check on this aspect of their health.Interested men who may have questions should call Patrick Henderson on 767 275 3019 or Neville Graham on 767 235 8798.Dominica Vibes News Share LocalNews Men urged to take advantage of free prostate cancer screening by: – June 23, 2012 Tweetcenter_img 8 Views   no discussions Sharing is caring! Lorgat says runner’s rule was misused

first_imgInternational Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat on Thursday defended the scrapping of runners saying the provision was being misused by the batsmen.ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat. The ICC, during its annual conference in Hong Kong on Tuesday, abolished the provision of having runners besides introducing new rules to spruce up the sport.Lorgat said that the more than a century old runner rule was put to end as it was not used by batsmen in the “right spirit”. It has been considered by the cricket committee… and there has been a strong feeling that runners were used not in the right spirit,” Lorgat said.It is quite a difficult one for umpires to determine whether there has been a real injury to batsmen or whether it was a tactical use of runners.” The debate on the need for runners came to the fore in the 2009 Champions Trophy when England captain Andrew Strauss turned down his South African counterpart Graeme Smith’s request for a runner while he was battling cramps. The ICC made the decision keeping in mind cases like these and came to a conclusion that runners can’t be taken for cramps as they are a result of fatigue and not an injury.”If a bowler gets injured you can’t continue bowling for the rest of the day and the feeling was that it would be better to not allow the use of runners because there has been abuse in the past,” said Lorgat. The move by the apex body however drew flak from Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, who demanded that bowlers should also be stopped from drinking water at the boundary line.advertisement- With inputs from agencieslast_img read more

FINALS DAY AT NSW STATE CUP!

first_imgAll finals and results will be updated as regularly as possible throughout the day: MENS OPEN FINALS: The Mens Open quarter finals see Wests facing the potential giant-killer in Manly, who have shown they can rise to an occasion over the tournament. Lismore, widely regarded as the strongest country side, will need to put in a strong performance to get past the experienced Easts side, although a potential semi final against Wests looms ahead. On their form in the final round match, many would be tipping Parramatta to make it through to the semis and the match between Canterbury and Penrith could go either way. Canterbury certainly challenged Wests in their final round match, but Penrith have performed consistently over the weekend and will rate themselves as a strong chance. The quarter finals went as expected, although some may not have called Penrith to make it past Canterbury. Penrith’s win sees them match up again against Parramatta who they upset in the pool matches. Western Suburbs will face Lismore who gave them a tough match in the pool rounds. Anything could happen come semi finals! QF1- 1st Pool 1 v 4th Pool 2: Western Suburbs (9) def Manly Warringah (3) QF2- 2nd Pool 2 v 3rd Pool 1: Lismore (6) def Eastern Suburbs (4) QF3- 1st Pool 2 v 4th Pool 1: Parramatta (4) def Cronulla (2) QF4- 2nd Pool 1 v 3rd Pool 2: Penrith (4) def Canterbury (2) In what was probably one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, Lismore defeated the highly fancied Western Suburbs, champions for the past two State Cups and recent Sydney Championships winners. With a side that includes several Gold Coast players, Lismore reversed their earlier defeat to grab a position in the main event against Parramatta, who easily accounted for Penrith 7-0. Parramatta looked strong, also reversing their earlier round match loss to Penrith and the grand final is shaping up to be a tight match. SF1- Winner QF1 v Winner QF2: Lismore (6) def Western Suburbs (5) SF2- Winner QF3 v Winner QF4: Parramatta (7) def Penrith (0) It was on for young and old in the Mens grand final. One of the best displays of Touch and also sportsmanship that had been seen the entire tournament. While there was that element of showmanship and fire that often comes with Mens Open, It never ventured into dirty and both sides were led by touch legends. For Parramatta it was Mark Boland, in his 19th year playing Mens Open who helped Parramatta take an early lead, his diving touch down showing nothing of his age. For Lismore, it was Mook Harrington Senior, who ran the length of the field from Australian Open representative Matt Curran to score. The young didn’t wait too long to get in on the act either, Parramatta and Australian rising star Troy Malcolm throwing a brilliant pass to get Parramatta ahead again before Mook Junior followed his father and scored for Lismore. After one final diving touch down Lismore were crowned State Cup Champions, the first ever country side to win the title in State Cup history…since 1977! GF- Winner SF1 v Winner SF2: Lismore (4) def Parramatta (3) Player of the Final- Nathan Jones (Lismore) WOMENS OPEN FINALS: The Womens Open finals are wide open, with final round matches on Sunday morning determining final positions. After the final round of matches Cronulla snuck through to the semis with a draw against Albion Park. They will need to improve to challenge Canterbury who beat them 5-1 in the round matches. SF1- 1st v 4th: Canterbury (3) def Cronulla (1) SF2- 2nd v 3rd Easts (4) def Wests (3) drop-off Matches between East and Canterbury are fast becoming tight and tough struggles that never fail to disappoint. After their recent Sydney Championships grand final meeting and then the final second draw in their pool match at State Cup; the Grand Final also followed the same titanic struggle of a track. Canterbury led for the entire match, remarkably holding Easts scoreless for a 1-0 win. Not to be understated considering the quality of the Easts side, which contained many current Australian Open and Junior representatives. For Canterbury this win was sweet especially after conceding to Easts in the pool match and giving up the lead in the Sydney Championships grand final. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)With just a few weeks remaining until the College Football Playoff field is decided, the Big 12 is still up in the air. Oklahoma is the favorite to win the conference and make the four team field, but there are still scenarios in which Baylor and Oklahoma State can capture the conference crown. Three games—Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Baylor-TCU, and Baylor-Texas—will decide the conference champion. ESPN’s Max Olson tweeted out a handy, simple chart explaining all of the possible scenarios. So who wins the Big 12? Here’s the updated and much simpler chart. pic.twitter.com/o4TdzjPICH— Max Olson (@max_olson) November 22, 2015After last year’s debacle with Baylor and TCU, the Big 12 made head-to-head result the first tiebreaker to name a conference champion, so if Oklahoma wins Bedlam, it will take home the crown due to its win over Baylor. If Oklahoma State wins Bedlam, it need either TCU or Texas to knock off the Bears. Otherwise, Baylor will win the league. We’re pretty excited to see it all play out.last_img read more
