‘We Can Supply the Liberian Market with Toiletries’

first_imgThe Concern Liberian International Business Organization (COLINBO) said that they are capable of supplying the Liberian market with toiletries and related products, adding that “there is no need to import any of such in the country.” Accordingly, COLINBO called on the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to place a moratorium on importing such goods for the Liberian market. The organization said that a moratorium will further President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s call for the growth and development of Liberian owned businesses. In a press release, COLINBO said it is making the call because there is a local industry with the capacity, equipment and manpower to supply the Liberian market with toiletries and its related products. The business group said it has assessed and verified that the Liberian owned National Toiletries located in Bernard Farm, Paynesville, has the capacity to supply the products to the local market. The group believes that if the government gives National Toiletries the exclusive right as the only Liberian firm to produce tissue and its related products, it will not only be a realization of the Liberianization Policy, but President Sirleaf’s dream of seeing ‘Made in Liberia’ products on the Liberian market.President Sirleaf has repeatedly called for ‘Made in Liberia’ products on the shelves of major supermarkets and businesses in the country. In a nationwide address last week, she reiterated her government’s commitment to have 25 percent of purchases from government ministries and agencies focusing on Liberian made products. COLINBO said it welcomes the President’s statement and hopes major supermarkets including UN Drive, Exclusive, Sasssouk, Harbel, will now put a halt on the importation of tissues and related products, and replace them with tissue paper being manufactured by the National Toiletries. Meanwhile, COLINBO is also proposing a reduction in the importation, or the placement of a moratorium on importing mineral water since a lot of local companies are producing water.COLINBO believes that placing a moratorium on these products will also help to provide more jobs for Liberians and keep money circulating in the local economy. The group said the promotion of local industry is one of the surest ways of reducing poverty and enhancing economic and infrastructural developments.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Empty homes in Donegal reaches 97 while over 500 remain on housing list

first_imgMore than 97 homes in Donegal have been unoccupied for more than three months while over 500 remain on the housing list, it was revealed on Monday. There have now been calls for Donegal County Council to speed up its housing allocation process after receiving confirmation that 32 houses in the Inishowen peninsula have been vacant for more than three months – despite 588 families remaining in housing need across the county.Commenting on the figures, Cllr Jack Murray said: “Despite the crisis in housing in Donegal, 97 council houses have remained unoccupied for more than three months – with, by far, the largest allocation of those being in Inishowen. “The level of housing need in Inishowen is a massive 588. Given that most of those applicants are families, it means that thousands of citizens are affected.“Therefore it is unacceptable that 32 houses can lie vacant while people are crying out for them.“So I am calling on Donegal County Council to make every effort to turn around houses once they become vacant and allocate them to families in need.“Every effort we take to help families off the housing list will have a positive and lifelong impact.” Empty homes in Donegal reaches 97 while over 500 remain on housing list was last modified: March 25th, 2019 by Shaun KeenanShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:housing marketInishowenlast_img read more

Game’s up for Suresh Kalmadi: International Olympic Committee chief says disgraced CWG boss and friends not eligible to contest IOA polls

first_imgIOA vice president Jagdish Tytler.Suresh Kalmadi’s long reign in the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is finally coming to an end.The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has ruled that it’s not possible for Kalmadi to hold any position in the national body as he has been implicated in various corruption scandals. The IOC expressed its view following a letter from IOA vice president Jagdish Tytler, who sought the world body’s position with regard to the association’s upcoming election. The IOA election is scheduled on November 25 and present president Kalmadi has expressed his desire to contest again. This despite him being ineligible according to the sports ministry’s age and tenure guidelines, as well as his implication in various financial irregularities related to the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games .Kalmadi’s yearning to continue as the IOA president, a position he has been holding for the last 16 years, may not have gone down well with Congress leader Tytler, who, by taking the initiative and writing to the IOC president, seems to be looking for a larger role in the national Olympic association. And now it seems Kalmadi’s various alleged misdemeanours have finally caught up with him with the IOC putting its foot down and stating in no uncertain terms that it will not like to see him involved in IOA’s affairs any more.Suspension is finalThe world body, in reply to Tytler’s letter, spelt out that Kalmadi, vice-president V.K. Verma and joint secretary Lalit Bhanot should be suspended from all functions within the IOA. As a result, the candidature of these three men for any position within the association becomes untenable.Tytler had written to IOC president Jacques Rogge, seeking the world body’s opinion on the upcoming election. The reply from Christophe de Kepper, IOC director general, referred to the stand taken by its Ethics Commission.”Messrs Kalmadi, Verma and Bhanot were all tried by a criminal court pursuant to the law on corruption linked to a sports event. The court even sentenced them to preventive detention for several months. For his part, Mr Kalmadi was released, but banned from leaving the national territory unless agreed by the court.”In view of these circumstances, the situation of Messrs Kalmadi, Verma and Bhanot is likely to lead to the application of point B.5 of the Code of Ethics,” the memorandum of the Ethics Commission said. Point 3.5 in the code states that: “The Olympic parties shall use due care and diligence in fulfilling their mission. They must not act in a manner likely to tarnish the reputation of the Olympic Movement.”The memorandum adds that though one should be presumed innocent till proven guilty, keeping the three IOA office-bearers away from any new set-up was required to maintain the integrity of the Olympic Movement.”Although, owing to the application of the presumption of innocence, the Ethics Commission cannot take any final decision on the situation of Messrs Kalmadi, Verma and Bhanot, it must however recommend a provisional measure to protect the reputation of the Olympic Movement regarding all three men, meaning their suspension from all functions within the Olympic Movement and in particular, the IOA until the final decision by the competent court in India,” it said. The commission alleged the IOA did not make its stand clear on the status of these three persons despite being asked to do so on several occasions.”At no time, and in spite of numerous reminders and requests from the IOC, did the NOC clearly make any statement regarding the situation of these three officials nor take any provisional measure concerning them,” it said. The Ethics Commission’s directive comes a fortnight after the IOC said it wants to send observers to the IOA election. After making much noise that it amounts to interference in its internal affairs, the IOA said it did not want to pick up a fight with its parent body. The IOC’s insistence in sending observers to the polls implies that the national body will not get its way this time. The IOA has, on several occasions, employed delaying tactics and tried to deflect attention from the matter at hand. There have been instances in the past when national Olympic committees have been suspended because of political interference. The case of Kuwait is a recent example. No support within The IOC is also very sensitive to corruption matters and any controversy on that count is not taken lightly. Tytler has forwarded the Ethics Commissions’s memorandum to acting IOA president V.K. Malhotra. It is ironical to note that Kalmadi, who is a Congress MP, does not seem to have much support within his own party. If Kalmadi is barred from the polls, the most likely candidate likely to contest from his camp is Indian Boxing Federation chairman Abhay Chautala. Kalmadi, who represents Pune in the Lok Sabha, has been IOA president since 1996.advertisementadvertisementlast_img read more

Expectations High for Development of Transshipment Hub

first_imgIndustry, Investment and Commerce Minister, Hon.  Anthony Hylton, says expectations for the development of Jamaica’s global logistics and transshipment hub are high among stakeholders in the business and trading community worldwide. Speaking at the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce’s (JCC) Breakfast Forum at the Knutsford Court Hotel, New Kingston, on December 18, Mr. Hylton said this resonated among stakeholders in Europe, Asia and Panama, with whom he and members of the Ministry have been meeting, in recent weeks, to discuss the matter. Development of the hub, which is estimated to cost between US$8 billion and US$10 billion, is being spearheaded by the Government in an effort to position Jamaica to take advantage of the anticipated increased maritime activities, expected to result from the expansion of the Panama Canal by 2015. Central to the development are: dredging of the Kingston Harbour; expansion of the Port of Kingston; development of the Caymanas Economic Zone, a transshipment commodity port, and Vernamfield in Clarendon as an air-cargo and passenger facility; and establishment of a dry dock facility. Development of the hub would make it the fourth such facility globally, along with those in Singapore; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and Rotterdam, Netherlands. Jamaica is deemed ideally positioned for the establishment of the hub, based on its location, midway between North and South America, and in relative proximity to the Panama canal Mr. Hylton said the feedback suggests that the stakeholders deem the hub to be “critically needed” to ensure that trade “moves efficiently and effectively as it can” across the region. He further pointed out that with the recognition of this opportunity that Jamaica has, the stakeholders are “looking to us to step up and to deliver.” “This project is of a global scale. The standards we are setting are along the lines of those in Singapore, Dubai, and Rotterdam. That is a tall order, but that’s the scope of opportunity that we have (to take advantage of); therefore, the scale of that opportunity must be matched by our efforts. It requires significant up-scaling in almost every aspect of how we do business,” the Minister said. Meanwhile, Mr. Hylton informed that the Ministry will be collaborating with the JCC to stage a series of consultations and public education activities with local stakeholders, to further enlighten them on the opportunities for investment in the hub’s development.   These consultations are expected to complement similar efforts undertaken overseas, which have yielded expressions of interest by a number of foreign investors, in participating in the project.     “We will be utilizing the Chamber’s network throughout the country, beginning in January in Montego Bay. Thereafter, we will identify a list of chambers in the various parishes that we will be utilizing to speak to this very critical issue for Jamaica’s growth and development,” Mr. Hylton said.last_img read more
