Hendrik Prayitno, the news editor of the daily Berita Sore, said Telaumbanua was kidnapped while reporting on a murder in the Teluk Dalam district. He recently wrote about a corruption case in which local officials are allegedly implicated. The police say they are investigating but refuse to link the kidnapping to Telaumbanua’s work.______________________________________________________31.08.2005Journalist kidnapped by six men on Nias islandReporters Without Borders voiced concern today about the fate of newspaper reporter Elyuddin Telaumbanua, who was beaten and abducted by a group of six unidentified men on 22 August on the island of Nias, off the northwestern coast of Sumatra. There has been no word of him since then.”We call on the Indonesian authorities to intervene in this case at once,” the press freedom organisation said. “It is essential that the police start searching for Telaumbanua. The reports about his kidnapping are confused and a rapid investigation is needed to shed light on the case. Telaumbanua could be in grave danger and need our help.”Telaumbanua works for Berita Sore, a daily newspaper based in Medan, in the north of Sumatra. He was abducted while heading to Teluk Dalam with a friend on a motorcycle with the aim of carrying out a reporting assignment there. They were pursued and intercepted about 15 km from Teluk Dalam by six men, who beat both of them but only abducted Telaumbanua. The friend was therefore able to give an account of what happened. Gabon’s media regulator does it again, suspending a leading news site

The HAC keeps on harassing the media and this latest arbitrary sanction confirms its complete loss of credibility. Crédit : Gabon Media Time (Facebook) News August 6, 2019 Gabon’s media regulator does it again, suspending a leading news site Weekly seized from Gabon’s newsstands November 27, 2020 Find out more News Receive email alerts RSF has been denouncing the HAC’s unjustified media closures for more than a year and each time another occurs, press freedom in Gabon is dealt a new blow. Its latest victim is Gabon Media Time, a website with more than 40,000 unique visitors a day that posted a story on 31 July about the shortage of beds in Gabon’s hospitals. Headlined “A two-year-old girl sent home because of a lack of beds at Gabon’s Cancer Institute,” it described the problem as a “real thorn in the government’s side.”Ordering the website’s closure for a month the next day, the HAC accused it of “malicious, suspicious and tendentious insinuations” that violated journalistic “ethics and professional conduct.”When contacted by RSF, Gabon Media Time editor Morel Mondjo Mouega described the sanction as “harsh with regard to the subject matter, which was verified with the family,” and said he would appeal to the HAC to reduce the punishment, which would entail a significant loss of revenue and which has led to the temporary lay-off of about ten employees.“The HAC is a like machine that keeps on producing sanctions, scouring the vague, imprecise and repressive laws regulating journalism in Gabon for ways to serve the government’s interests and prevent any legitimate criticism with regard to issues in the public interest,” said Arnaud Froger, the head of RSF’s Africa desk. “This policy of systematic sanctions encourages self-censorship, creates economic problems for many media outlets and helps to undermine the country’s image. If the Gabonese authorities are still committed to press freedom, they have no choice but to completely overhaul the legislation regulating the entity that is supposed to defend press freedom.”According to RSF’s tally, this latest arbitrary sanction has been preceded by 12 others since the HAC’s creation by government decree in February – an unprecedented punitive wave that already prompted RSF to call for the overhaul of the Gabonese media’s “executioner.”The HAC’s latest victims also include Freddhy Koula, a reporter and sports consultant for Radio France Internationale who was banned on 16 July from practising journalism for six months because of his Facebook posts quoting complaints by members of Gabon’s under-20 women’s football team about their accommodation and accusing some of their supervisors of rape and sexual assault. The HAC ordered the Gabonese media not to work with Koula, who lives in France, and said it would enforce application of its decision without waiting for the conclusion of an investigation into the allegations that was ordered by the previous sports minister. And on 24 July, the HAC ordered the immediate suspension of no fewer than 30 online media outlets until they have complied with all the necessary administrative and legal redtape.Gabon is ranked 115th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2019 World Press Freedom Index. last_img read more

Receive email alerts MexicoAmericas Condemning abusesProtecting journalists DisappearancesFreedom of expressionViolence News April 28, 2021 Find out more Crime reporter Norma Sarabia Garduza, 46, was gunned down in cold blood outside her home in the town of Huimangillo, Tabasco state, on the evening of 12 June. She was with a relative on the veranda when masked men pulled up in a car, opened fire and then drove off.Sarabia worked for many regional newspapers including Cambio de Puebla, Sol del Sureste and Tabasco Hoy, a daily for which she had been working for 20 years. She also wrote for the news website Hoy editor Héctor Tapia said she had received threats in connection with her articles. After a series of stories implicating Tabasco police officers in a kidnapping, she filed a complaint with the federal authorities against Huimangillo police chief Héctor Tapia Ortíz and deputy police chief Martín Leopoldo García de la Vega, and requested protection. The ensuing investigation was closed in 2016 without any action being taken. The Federal Mechanism for the Protection of Journalists meanwhile decided at that time that there was no need for specific protection measures for Sarabia. Ricardo Jaciel Rivera, the spokesman for the Tabasco prosecutor’s office, told RSF that the office had not received any recent complaint about threats.“In view of the possible involvement of Tabasco officials in this shocking execution-style murder, the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes against Freedom of Expression (FEADLE) has grounds for taking over the investigation,” said Emmanuel Colombié, the head of RSF’s Latin America bureau. “Furthermore, given the wave of violence against the media since Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s inauguration as president, including at least eight murders of journalists, the Mexican government must take urgent measures to reinforce protection for journalists, especially in states poisoned by organized crime and corruption such as Veracruz and Tabasco.”Marco Miranda Cogco, a reporter for Notiver and Televisa and editor of the Facebook news page Noticias A Tiempo, was kidnapped by two hooded men at around 8:30 a.m. on 12 June in the city of Boca del Río, in Veracruz state, while taking his son to school. He was found at the side of a road 17 hours later, alive but bearing the marks of physical violence. While Miranda was still missing, his wife told local media that he had been threatened by Veracruz interior minister Eric Cisneros Burgos, who had offered him bribes in return for positive coverage and told him “you know what will happen to you” if he refused. Miranda had nonetheless refused, his wife said.Miranda had just published compromising information implicating Veracruz government officials. His safety and his family’s safety must be a priority for the federal and local authorities, RSF said.Sarabia was the sixth journalist to be murdered in Mexico in 2019. The other five were Francisco Romero Díaz, Telésforo Santiago Enríquez, Jesús Eugenio Ramos Rodríguez, Rafael Murúa Manríquez and Santiago Barroso. Sarabia’s murder confirms Mexico’s current status as the world’s deadliest country for the media.last_img read more

UN and Google Create Climate Change Mapping Resources

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… dana oshiro A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting In January 2009, only 41% of US voters believed that global warming was caused by fossil fuel emissions and other man-made causes. According to a recent Rasmussen national report, the majority of those surveyed over the phone believed that global warming was part of a natural planetary trend that will reverse itself over time. In a panic to sway public perception and environmental decision making, the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat recently teamed up with Google to create a Greenhouse Gas Map detailing man’s environmental pollution. The map is a color-coded Google Maps mash up that pulls national greenhouse gas inventory and Kyoto Protocol data to display toxic emissions in industrialized nations. The tool was created in anticipation of the UN’s Climate Change Conference to be held at the end of this year. As the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012, leaders from more than 150 countries will convene in Copenhagen to establish a post-Kyoto global climate change agreement. A simple look at the map’s lethal levels of carbon dioxide make a good case for stricter emission limits. While the project is certainly one of the more recent environmental map mash ups, a number of efforts have already been implemented. Below are four additional green mapping projects. 1. Atlas of Our Changing Environment: The United Nations Environment Program uses Google Earth to exhibit time lapse and environmental changes. From the effects of coal exploitation in northeastern Wyoming’s Powder River Basin, to controlled burning in Australia’s Wyperfeld National Park, to the growth of the aquaculture industry in Ecuador’s Guayaquil – the map shows human implications on the environment. One of the great things about this tool is that in addition to negative effects, you can also see how proper urban planning can help preserve large sections of forest. 2. Stopping the Coal Rush Map: The Sierra Club also utilizes Google Earth to make its case for environmental responsibility and clean energy alternatives. The organization has mapped the country’s planned coal plants in recognition that the air pollution pumped from these plants is likely to increase public health issues and global warming. The colored pinpoints on the map signify the building status of the coal plant and the details behind the site’s permits. In some cases you can read where Sierra Club has lobbied the Environmental Protection Agency to overturn air permits. 3. Earth Knowledge: This site mashes up Google map information with news stories on biodiversity, climate change, geology and water pollution. News sources like Science Daily and Reuters offer stories on global sustainability and alternative energy. Users can also discuss topics with other community members. 4. Home Project Maplet: For this year’s World Environment Day, Google launched the Home Project– a full length feature film on climate change. Shot by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, the movie is an aerial look at the planet and climate change. In conjunction with the movie, Google released an amazing map applet, complete with geo-tagged Wikipedia, video, web cam and photo layers. Users can also find tagged information on biodiversity, global warming factors, water and poverty. center_img Tags:#Google#Lists#web Related Posts 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

How to Distribute Your Short Film in Today’s Online Marketplace

first_imgHere is some insight into finding the right home for your short film or video content in today’s online distribution world.Cover image via Ekateryna Zubal. So you made a short film, and it got into some festivals — now what? In the past, this would more than likely be the end of your film’s public life, especially without a sales agent. For years, the only way to increase visibility for your short film was to upload it directly to a free watch site like YouTube or Vimeo, but there are many more options today. Some of them even offer licensing or acquisition fees — or an amount that correlates with your film’s streaming success on the site. In this article, we’ll give you a look at some of the options you have to distribute your content online, and some examples of the terms distributors are offering short filmmakers.First, A Little AdviceEvery distribution outlet has its own compensation policies, so make sure you read the fine print and know exactly what you’re getting into before you ink the deal. An exclusive contract means the company or site has acquired the right to be the sole distributor of your film for as long as the contract states. This means you cannot post the piece anywhere else online, limiting your capacity to make money distributing your film. It’s best to sign several shorter, non-exclusive contracts so you can maximize your film’s potential by distributing it on several sites, each with its own compensation deal. Ultimately, there’s not a lot of money in distribution for shorts, so the key is to have the film seen by as many people as possible. When it comes to having your finished work seen, exposure is a currency all its own!Types of VODImage via Jacob Lund.TVOD: Transactional — you pay to view (ex. iTunes).Site pays per minute of content, a one-time flat rate.Site pays per project, a one-time flat rate.Site pays per increments (often minutes) streamed, a number that, in some cases, has no limit — your success can increase exponentially if your film gains popularity on the site.Site pays per viewer or up-vote. Explore Niche MarketsImage via David MG.If your short film fits into a specific genre, you might want to explore niche-streaming sites as a way to deliver your content directly to its most likely fans. The most popular type of site is for sci-fi, horror, and fantasy content. Here are a couple:DUST — Gunpowder & Sky’s genre channel is a favorite for all things science fiction & VR.Films of any length welcome, free to submit. The channel pays to acquire content via non-exclusive contracts.Enjoy web traffic from audiences who already trust and look to DUST to deliver quality sci-fi content. Seed&Spark — Female-founded and run, Emily Best’s popular indie-crowdfunding platform is also a great outlet for distributing your short film. Seed&Spark’s only requirement is that your film cannot be available online for free while streaming on the site. Enjoy radical transparency, plenty of web traffic, and a limitless capacity for earning — the more people stream your film, the more you make.Submit simply and free of cost on their website. One of the highest-paying platforms for short films, averaging at $00.25/minute streamed.Enjoy 60% of the revenue split and a non-exclusive contract.Customized marketing support + deep audience data. Many of Seed&Spark’s viewers are also people who spend time on the site contributing to crowdfunding campaigns — you might find your next financier. Explore International MarketsThere’s a reason the studios commission different posters for their blockbuster movies in foreign markets: different audiences, different desires. Sometimes a film received only marginally well domestically goes on to have an exceptionally long and successful shelf life internationally. For international distribution, your choices are vast. You’ll have to do a lot more research, but here is a start:Shorts International — The self-proclaimed “global home of short movies,” Shorts International/ShortsTV is a website, TV channel, and now producer of short content active on an international scale.Boasts the world’s largest catalog of short films online.A free submission form is available on the website for films 40 minutes or less. The site doesn’t pay to acquire content, but in some cases will link to an outlet (i.e. Amazon, iTunes) where your piece is available for rent/purchase. SVOD: Subscription — you subscribe to view (ex. Netflix/Amazon Prime).AVOD: Advertising — you watch adverts to view (ex. YouTube). Short of The Week — A well-respected and looked-to destination for short films, Short of The Week boasts an impressive degree of visibility for the films it curates.$29 submission fee (shorts under 40 minutes). No financial gains, but the opportunity to increase your film’s visibility exponentially, giving it a longer shelf life on social media, and a greater chance to help you create a name for yourself. The website’s promise: “We will help you coordinate your launch and seed your film with key industry influencers in advance to maximize impact.”center_img It’s A Short — The content on this site is organized by genre channels, so fans of comedy, drama, horror, or documentary can go directly to that channel and find your film.Subscribers pay monthly, annually, or immediately per rental — the site pays the rental fee for your short directly to you. It’s A Short offers online film festival contests you can enter to win cash prizes. There’s a channel for every major genre, including Action, Animation, Family, Music, and more, so there’s bound to be a place for your piece. Explore Indie MarketsWith “indie darlings,” often the goal is to have your short seen by the filmmakers you want to be working with. The key here is curation. You want your film to screen on a reputable site alongside other quality, heartfelt, decidedly idiosyncratic pieces. Here are a few good options:NoBudge — Founded by filmmaker and actor Kentucker Audley, this is a “movie club” that hosts a new film every day and even offers live screenings in its home city of Brooklyn, NY.$25 submission fee (shorts under 25 minutes). No financial gains, but the opportunity to find your film a well-curated home on “one of the premier destinations for true independent movies” (No Film School).Live screenings and filmmaker afterparties offer the opportunity to network with potential future collaborators.  UniFrance List — This 2010 list compiled by UniFrance contains information for 50 distributors in 17 different countries. You can find the list in the following places:On the Raindance Film Festival site, you can find a downloadable PDF version of the original list by UniFrance. This 2016 No Film School article contains a digestible breakdown with some updates in the comments section. Show Me Shorts Website — Compiled by Grace Hood-Edwards in 2017, this list provides a good technical overview of some of your options for VOD distribution for both shorts and features. If you find the right home for it, your short film can have a life far beyond its initial festival run. Why the Factory is Moving South

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 3rd book: Eat Their Lunch “The first ever playbook for B2B salespeople on how to win clients and customers who are already being serviced by your competition.” Buy Now Running a business isn’t easy.I just watched a video in which the leader of well-known and well-respected brand informed his workers that their jobs would be eliminated in the next two years while the facility relocates to Mexico. The leader of this company stated that the reason for the move was the price conscious nature of the customer who buys their product. He then said that moving to Mexico would allow them to keep up the product quality and productivity while lowering their cost and allowing them to compete on price.Price Is a Strategy for OneThis story is an example of why it is important that you create greater value as a sales organization and as an individual salesperson. It is imperative that you justify the difference in price when your price is higher than your competitor’s by creating greater value, value worth paying more to obtain.Only one company can have the “lowest price.” If two companies both have the same price, one of them has to do something to differentiate their offering. It’s tough to win a race to the bottom; at some point, your money and energy produce greater returns elsewhere.Good People Who Sell BadlyI’m certain the plant workers are good people who have done nothing to deserve to lose their jobs, even if their union wages and benefits far exceed the wage and cost structure in Mexico. American workers are very productive. I’m also certain the leadership team is made up of good people who are trying very hard to run a good business. But I don’t believe that the people responsible for the leadership and marketing of this brand focused on the work of a sales organization. I doubt that they would even describe themselves as a sales organization engaged in the manufacturing of their product. They’d describe themselves as a manufacturer. And this is the root of their problem. You are a sales organization that happens to provide the product, service, or solution you produce. If a leadership team doesn’t focus on creating greater value and telling the story of how it makes a difference for their customer, then price quickly becomes the determining factor customers consider. If a sales organization isn’t focused on sales and selling value, especially when their sales model is a difficult one in which to execute a value-creating approach, then the sales force defaults to price. You have to train, develop, and coach a sales force to succeed in selling value, including one not under your direct control. If your marketing message doesn’t justify the price differential, create brand awareness, and equip the people who sell your product to capture effectively the additional value you create, then price will prevail. It MattersHow you sell matters very much. It’s critical that you know how you create value and how you differentiate your offering. There are great profitable businesses that don’t measure themselves on revenue alone. It’s okay to build a highly profitable business that owns the segment of the market that perceives value from what they do and who is willing to pay for it.last_img read more
