Syracuse football squares off with robust Notre Dame defense

first_img Facebook Twitter Google+ Published on September 27, 2014 at 12:31 pm Contact Jacob: [email protected] | @Jacob_Klinger_ As a fan of football, Tim Lester is amazed by Notre Dame’s defense. He enjoys watching it. When he does, he said he doesn’t know what’s coming. But in the eyes of Syracuse’s quarterbacks coach, the No. 8 Fighting Irish’s (3-0) secondary poses a serious threat. Lester said the Orange (2-1) won’t overly adjust to Notre Dame’s defense. The Irish play more man-to-man coverage than any team SU has faced this season and run a series of highly unpredictable sets on third down, fueled by unusually versatile athletes.“It’s trying to figure out and put ourselves in a situation, a good situation when they’ve got people running all over the place,” Lester said. “And it’s all the Rex Ryan stuff on third down.”Fighting Irish defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder joined the team after coaching the New York Jets linebackers last season. Ryan, the Jets head coach, is known for using a version of the 46 defense honed by his father Buddy, with the Chicago Bears of the 1980s.The defense is known for bringing pressure from all angles with unusual personnel — for instance, safeties playing as linebackers.AdvertisementThis is placeholder text“He’s had people influence his creativity when he was with the Jets,” SU head coach Scott Shafer said. “I see some of the same carryover, some of the same man concepts.”Sometimes, Shafer said, VanGorder will have his defense play man-to-man coverage on one side of the field and zone on the other.Lester has been giving Syracuse players stats on the percentages of which kind of coverage Notre Dame plays out of each defensive formation, he said. Most teams run man coverage as its fifth- or sixth-most used defense, Lester said, but it’s Notre Dame’s third-most frequently used. And when the Irish slips into its 3-3-5 set — what some teams call “Okie” or “star” packages — they drop defensive lineman Romeo Okwara into coverage, Lester said.  Where Lester usually sees a lineman lumber off as defensive back trots onto the field, UND keeps the 6-foot-4, 260-pound Okwara on the field.“He’s that big and athletic that he can play the nickel, which is impressive,” Lester said. While Shafer credits VanGorder as a creative coach, he’s also one managing a highly talented defense.“It’s always easy to be creative when you’ve got guys that can run around and do those things,” Shafer said. “And he’s got a bunch of them.” Commentslast_img read more

Megan McSheffrey Serves as Page in Washington State Senate

first_imgFacebook46Tweet0Pin0Submitted by The Washington State LegislatureMegan McSheffrey, 15, served as a page in the Washington State Senate during the week of February 22, the seventh week of the 2016 Legislative Session.“Megan was so great,” said Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe, D-Bothell, who sponsored McSheffrey’s week in the Legislature. “I hope she had a great experience that she will never forget.”During their week at the Capitol, pages assist senators and staff, hear lectures from guest speakers, and attend page school where they create their own bills in a mock committee setting. McSheffrey helped write a bill concerning gender identity bathroom choice. The bill would prohibit using the bathroom based on gender identity, requiring instead a gender reassignment surgery. The pages come together in one of the legislative hearing rooms to debate and vote on their bills. Though her bill was voted down by the committee, McSheffrey said the whole process of researching and having a real debate with her colleagues was fun.“The committee was really exciting,” said McSheffrey.Page school is only a small part of being a page. One of the primary responsibilities is delivering important documents to the many offices around the Capitol campus, which can be intimidating at first. Luckily, there are security guards in every building who are well known among pages for their kindness. McSheffrey said she was nervous when she took a few wrong turns, but quickly found the security staff’s helpful presence.“We are not just sitting in an office doing paperwork,” said McSheffrey. “It feels good being able to help someone with their job.”The page program is open to any Washington student between 14 and 17 years old. While the page experience is a hands-on opportunity for students to learn about their government, McSheffrey said that her favorite part was the connections she made with other pages. She encouraged others interested in the program to go for it.“It is definitely worthwhile,” said McSheffrey. “I want to do it again next year if I am allowed to.”McSheffrey is a sophomore at Northwest Christian High School in Lacey. She loves running track and cross country, and also enjoys horseback riding and vaulting, playing the violin and participating in her church theater. She is looking forward to summer camp. For more information about the Senate Page Program, contact [email protected]last_img read more

Fair Haven Takes Steps To Keep Streets Friendly

first_imgThe Department of Transportation’s grant will go directly to pay Parsons Brinckerhoff Engineering Services, New York City, to do the research and write the final report detailing what can be done for all of the borough roadways to improve them for multiple uses and not just motor vehicles. The public can go to the borough website, fairhavennj.org, where they can find more information about the study, a fact sheet, access to an online, interactive map, as well as the opportunity to offer comments for the final study. Lucarelli has formed a committee to collaborate with the engineering firm. The committee, he said, consists of “this tremendous talent” of borough residents like Gail O’Reilly, who has experience working in municipal governments; Tracy Challenger Cole, whose background is as a professional planner and with commercial downtown development experience; and John McCormick, a traffic engineer. “It’s really cool, the talent we have here,” Lucarelli observed. Fair Haven has long been a bicycle-centric community. Just visiting the borough’s two public schools, Viola L. Sickles Elementary School, Willow Street, and Knollwood School, Hance Road, for middle graders, you will see racks in front of the buildings jammed-packed with students’ bikes, used to get them back and forth from school. The borough doesn’t offer student busing. The borough on school days closes Third Street to traffic for part of the day to allow kids to make their way to and from school. And on weather-appropriate weekends a common sight is whole families out on their bikes for recreation or even running errands.Lucarelli has long been a cycling enthusiast and had aggressively lobbied to have the county government install bicycle lanes on some county roads as the roads were repaved and lined, which the county did do last year. But, Lucarelli did point out there are other steps that need to be taken to help make it a safer environment. In recent years there was a traffic/cycling fatality on River Road, in the borough’s business district, which isn’t lined for bike lanes.Fair Haven’s bicycle-friendly culture has contributed to the community’s attractiveness, Lucarelli said, continuing to attract new homeowners and businesses.Cyndi Steiner, executive director of the New Jersey Bike and Walk Coalition, believes “it’s something more towns should pursue.” Establishing a long-term plan to share roadways has multiple benefits, including improving safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, she said. But, Steiner continued, it has positive effects in less direct ways, such as on the local economy. “Businesses are usually very happy,” she said, “because people on bikes, people walking, spend money,” and don’t have to worry about parking. By John BurtonFAIR HAVEN – Borough officials are asking for the public’s help in making the community more pedestrian – and cyclist – friendly. Thanks to a state Department of Transportation Local Technical Assistance Grant, local officials have contracted with an engineering firm to draft a study mapping out ways of ensuring Fair Haven remains safe for cyclists and pedestrians for coming generations, explained Mayor Benjamin Lucarelli. He envisions the eventual master plan for this issue to be a “50-year, multigenerational document.”“The reason for this plan,” Lucarelli said this week, “is for the next governing body, when they go to pave the road, they’ll know what it is they should do. They won’t have to reinvent the wheel,” and may be able to have additional bicycle lanes and shared road stenciling put in place on the roadways following future repaving.last_img read more

At long last, lie-flats land at Hawaiian Airlines

first_imgHawaiian Airlines’ new Premium Cabin promises to catapult the carrier into competition with other transpac players.Hawaiian welcomed home its first A330-200 fitted with fully lie-flat seats, the anchor element of an all-out remake of the airline’s premium product.  With routes stretching from China to New York, being able to stretch out and sleep soundly is a pre-requisite for some passengers before booking passage. Business travelers are especially keen on this. The truth is, Hawaiian has lagged behind in the lie-flat arena. As the A330-200 fleet gets refitted, there will be 18 lie-flats up front, in the pointy end of the airplane. They fold down into 180-degee affairs that are 20.5 inches wide and a full 76 inches long. They’re arrayed in a 2x2x2 configuration.  That means that passengers in the window seats don’t have direct aisle access. Hawaiian calls the seat controls “intuitive.” Seats come equipped with multiple power ports, an A/C outlet and a pair of USB connections. The inflight entertainment (IFE) is served up on large-format tablets, which rest on adjustable, telescoping arms. For those who appreciate the aesthetics of aircraft interiors Hawaiian, in conjunction with the PaulWylde consultancy of California has, according to the airline, “incorporate[d] flowing curves evocative of the winds and ocean, while marrying organic textures and pops of bright saturated color in its Premium Cabin.”At the same time Hawaiian’s A330-200 premium product receives a major makeover, it’s adding 28 more Extra Comfort seats, making for total of 68 of the 36-inch seat-pitch seats. The re-work of the cabin layout means the airline’s newly revamped A330-200s will sport 278 seats in all—16 fewer than the previous configuration. Hawaiian expects to have twenty-three A330-200s by this summer. The airline plans to start selling new Premium Cabin passage this fall. That’s when the first dedicated routes will be announced—as will “new signature service elements” and amenities. Hawaiian air safety ratinglast_img read more

Using Energy Modeling to Get to Zero

first_imgA computerized energy model is an essential element of building design for high-performance homes, because it allows the designer to predict the energy performance of a building based on specific site characteristics, structural assemblies, mechanical efficiencies, and renewable technologies. By adjusting these elements of building performance, the designer can choose the most cost-effective combination of features. While models are just predictions — and therefore will never be completely accurate — skillful use of a modeling tool should lead to more affordable, energy-efficient buildings. That leaves two questions. Just how important is energy modeling for cost effectively designing zero energy homes? And how accurate is energy modeling? Now more than everFor several decades, the mantra of high-performance building design was to slash the amount of energy used for the two largest building loads: space heating and water heating. If these efforts are successful, less energy needs to be purchased or generated on-site. What was learnedWhile each energy model produced slightly different results, both models reveal a significant fact about residential energy use in this home. The amount of energy consumed by plug loads, lights, and appliances dwarfs that of space heating, cooling, and water heating. It’s no surprise because this home includes a highly insulated and air-sealed thermal envelope as well as a highly efficient heat-pump water heater and energy-recovery ventilation (ERV) system. In the design of my home, like most zero energy projects, the efficiency of the thermal envelope, water heating, and lighting was targeted first. So, the next step in improving energy efficiency in a home like mine would be to focus on appliances and plug loads. In fact, research indicates that cable boxes, game consoles, large screens, and other electronics are taking a big bite of the home energy pie each year.Since selection of appliances and management of plug loads are not generally under the control of designers or builders, one design solution to address this challenge would be to include a home energy management system in zero energy homes. The results also suggest another approach. With the price of rooftop solar systems declining rapidly, it would be wise to weigh the cost of adding more solar with the cost of other energy saving measures. At some point, adding a few more PV panels may be cheaper than building thicker walls, buying super-efficient windows, or installing energy management systems. Of course, solar electric systems might be limited by more than cost. Solar exposure and available roof area must also be considered. Here again, an energy model can help balance various design issues. Energy Modeling SoftwareBEopt Software Has Been Released to the PublicWUFI Is Driving Me CrazyEnergy Modeling Isn’t Very AccurateIs Modeling a Four-Letter Word?Practical Design Advice for Zero-Net Energy HomesIt’s Not About Space HeatingDeep Energy Retrofits Are Often Misguided Net energy is the amount generated through solar panels minus the total energy use. So, a negative number means the scenario does not reach zero energy, while a positive number means that the home would generate more energy than it uses. Modeling programsThere are a variety energy modeling programs to choose from. Since computerized predictions utilizing differing assumptions can never be precisely right, I decided to use two different modeling programs and compare their results with the actual energy usage of my own home.I selected REM/Rate, software commonly used in Energy Star and many utility programs, and a free online calculator created by Build Equinox called Zero. Making this comparison gave me an opportunity to explore options for designing zero energy homes more cost effectively based on the information from these two models. My zero energy home has 939 square feet of living space and was built in 2015. It’s superinsulated, very airtight, and uses a minisplit heat pump for heating and cooling. Hot water is supplied by a heat-pump water heater. There is a 4.3 kW photovoltaic system on the roof. My home is in Climate Zone 5 with about 7,000 heating degree days. In order to get the most consistent results from the two programs, I used the same inputs for both models. The first chart shows results from each energy model compared to the actual energy use of my home. How does modeling compare to reality?Neither program closely predicted the performance of the home over these two years. Build Equinox Zero predicted energy use that was 37% above the actual, while REM/Rate’s number was even higher. That’s not surprising. Each year presented a widely different weather pattern. For example, 2016 was relatively mild, while the early months of 2017 were marked by sub-zero temperatures and about 30 inches of snowfall that completely covered the solar panels for several weeks.Computer models work with long-term weather averages, and so they can’t be expected to match any two-year snapshot. To complicate matters, the climate may be changing faster than predicted.Furthermore, neither computer model can predict residents’ actual energy-use patterns. In the case of my family, we are probably more frugal in our use of energy that the “average” family assumed in these models, which could in part account for both models overestimating our actual energy use. As in the models, a designer or consultant would certainly want to take a conservative approach. Better-than-expected performance would mean that extra energy could help power an electric vehicle or electric yard equipment.Of the two programs, Build Equinox Zero came closer to predicting actual overall performance in our case. Its estimate fell into the positive energy category, matching the reality of our home energy use, while REM/Rate was more conservative and predicted that the home would not reach a zero energy level of performance. Why was neither program very close to reality? To answer that question, it helps to dig into the more detailed reports.center_img While load reduction is still an essential design goal, the dramatic decline in the price of rooftop solar electric systems creates a new design question: What is the optimal balance among shell measures (insulating and sealing walls, windows, ceilings, etc.), high-efficiency mechanical equipment, and on-site renewable systems? However, there are four factors that come into play in different projects and regions of the country that make answering the question more complicated:A wide variety of interwoven energy measures can be taken to reach net zero; The cost of renewable, especially solar, energy systems is dropping rapidly;Government and utility financial incentives vary in different parts of the country;Local equipment and construction costs change rapidly with local market conditions.Instead of making a judgment call based on intuition, energy models offer designers quantitative, project-specific feedback and guidance. The majority of residential buildings fail to take advantage of this tool and rely, instead, on building codes as the sole benchmark of energy performance. Even most third-party certification programs, such as Energy Star, Zero Energy Ready Homes, Living Building Challenge, and Earth Advantage, use energy modeling only for program compliance rather than as an iterative design tool to find the most cost-effective set of energy saving and renewable energy measures for a given project.Designers and energy consultants can unlock the value of energy modeling as a design tool by modeling different combinations of energy-related features to see which combinations yield the best performance for the least cost. If your goal is to build an affordable zero energy home, then an energy model is an essential planning tool for making the smart decisions needed to design a a cost-effective building. RELATED ARTICLES How the modeling programs compareIn the categories of space heating, water heating, and PV production, the two models used were in fairly close agreement. The methodology for calculating these parameters is well established, so the level of agreement makes sense. One number that jumps off the comparison table, however, is the difference in cooling energy. REM/Rate estimated nine times more consumption for cooling than Build Equinox Zero. While the percentage was very high, the absolute number of kilowatt hours was very low due to the almost insignificant cooling requirement at this location.REM/Rate’s estimate was closer to reality on solar electricity generation by predicting only 5% more kWh than actually was produced and was very close to the 5,767 kWh that the solar contractor estimated for my solar production. As mentioned, the category of plug loads, lights, and appliances represents by far the largest energy use. REM/Rate predicted 26% more energy used in this category than Build Equinox Zero. This difference may result from the set of assumptions used by each program. While total energy consumption varied significantly between the two models themselves and between both models and the actuals, virtually all of these discrepancies can be attributed to the lights, electronics, and appliances category. While the percent discrepancies may seem high, both programs offer useful information for design decision making. Model evolutionOn-site storage batteries and electric vehicles are entering the market in a big way. The next developmental step for energy modeling software should be to integrate these technologies into their calculations. The tight integration of solar, storage, and transportation, along with the usual energy saving measures, will be essential to reach zero energy/zero carbon in the residential sector. As momentum is growing to move the housing industry to zero energy for all new construction, building cost-effective zero energy homes is crucial. Energy modeling will be a key step in achieving this goal. Based on my comparison of actual energy use in my home with these two different modeling systems, the modeling program selected may be less important than the practice of using energy modeling in an iterative manner to optimize performance and affordability of zero energy homes. Gagan shows his shooting prowess in men’s 10m air rifle singles event

first_imgThe day Gagan was waiting for riveting rivalries in sports usually have to do with people from different countries. Be it Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal or, if you move to cricket, Sachin Tendulkar vs Shane Warne, or Mike Tyson against Evander Holyfield in boxing – it is the rivalries that keep fans glued to the action. Cut to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, you have two Indian shooters who keep having a go at each other in the range, and only one wins. On Wednesday, as Gagan Narang and Abhinav Bindra unpacked their air rifles at the Karni Singh range in Tughlakabad, it was clear that revenge was on Gagan’s mind. For almost two years now, Gagan has been smarting after having missed out on a place in the final at the Beijing Olympics. A score of 595 then meant he was not in the final and Bindra got in to make history. If one thought Gagan would have been happy a countryman won gold, you’re right. At the same time, once he did not do well in the other two events in Beijing, he was a haunted man. He kept talking about how one point made all the difference as he could not make it to the final. Gagan has been waiting for this day for long.As one who threatened to pull out of the Games as he had been denied the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, his showing till now has been sublime. Agreed, Gagan came into shooting much later than Bindra, but this India vs India contest in the shooting range always generates high voltage stuff. It’s not every day that a shooter scores 600/600 and is still told by the international shooting federation (ISSF) this it is not recognised as a world mark. When asked about their rivalry, the two shooters keep mum “as shooting is an individual sport”.advertisementHowever, since a healthy rivalry always motivates one to do better, there can be just one reason why Gagan cranked himself up like this: To prove a point to the Olympic gold medallist. For long, Gagan has felt he doesn’t get recognised like Bindra or some other athlete despite all his feats. It’s a complex only he can dispel. But the bigger thrill will again come from the Asian Games in Guangzhou next month, where he will be competing with Bindra. It’s strange how these two men still shake hands after the event gets over!last_img read more
