Red light cameras watching drivers

first_imgMONTEBELLO – As of Monday, drivers who run the red light at the Montebello and Paramount boulevards intersection will get a $381 citation in the mail. Enforcement of a new red light camera program began at 6 a.m. at the intersection, following a two-month grace period in which violators received warnings, said retired Montebello Police Department Sgt. Craig Powers, who is charge of the program. “The intersection is one of the top three intersections that studies show has the highest rates of accidents,” he said. Meet The Ubuntu Women – They’re More Involved Than You Think

first_imgTake a quick look around the Ubuntu forums and IRC channels and you can miss the pattern: it’s mostly men. That is not to say that there is no diversity in the open source community, only that you need to look a little deeper to find it.According to a recent survey, only 12% of professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are women. So I felt especially lucky to “sit-down” with Ubuntu Women members Elizabeth “Lyz” Krumbach and Cheri Francis over a Google+ hangout to discuss the work they are doing with the organization. Why Ubuntu? All jabs at Unity aside, it is still one of the most popular Linux distributions and this group is doing its best to promote that message while also encouraging women to become more involved. From its humble beginnings in 2006, the Ubuntu Women mission has been clear – to encourage women to use and contribute to Ubuntu. The organization is not political, so you’ll find no mentions of feminism or the like, but rather a safe place where women, curious about the Ubuntu developer community, can come and ask questions without fear of intimidation or condescension. The group’s membership has grown to over 300 (including myself) with support from everyone from Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth himself to other community leaders and project teams. veronica henry Tags:#2010 in Review#hack Why You Love Online Quizzes What exactly do the Ubuntu Women Do Anyway?MentorshipThough efforts at a formal mentorship program fizzled, the team was not deterred. After some retooling, what emerged was a more informal, but much more effective system. When new members reach out, usually via mailing list or the IRC chat room, someone from the team immediately responds and puts them in touch with a community member who can help get them going.ContributionsContributions to the Ubuntu and open source community are as varied as they are numerous. Here’s just a snapshot of some of the areas where the Ubuntu Women as individuals and a team have made a significant impact:• IRC channel support• Documentation• Education• O’Reilly Linux DevCenter blogging• Package maintenance• Development & testing• Local community leadershipRecently elected to the Ubuntu Women leadership team, Lyz Krumbach just won the O’Reilly Open Source Award for her open source contributions. And she will soon be traveling to Ghana to help San Francisco non-profit Partimus – which provides repurposed computers running free software to students and schools in need – with deploying Ubuntu systems.Cheri Francis, another member of the leadership team, is the spearhead behind the group’s monthly Career Day. She also heads up her local community group, ReLoCo and also participates with the accessibility and NGO teams. One of Francis’ proudest moments is introducing Ubuntu to her mom, who has multiple sclerosis. Ubuntu offers the customization she needed to modify the system to make it easier for her mother to use and remember things. This has allowed her to do more than she has with any other computer. Also sitting on the Ubuntu Leadership team is Amber Graner. She is the co-author of The Official Ubuntu Book, and a frequent organizer and speaker at open source events around the world.EducationEach month, the group hosts a Career Day chat on IRC in the Ubuntu Classroom #ubuntuclassroom. Cheri Francis spearheads this initiative, frustrated by the lack of information available about IT careers that could help her and others make more informed career decisions. An IT industry professional attends the online chat and posts information about her career – like how to break into the field, skills needed and what a typical day is like. Each session lasts about an hour, with time included for questions and answers. The next chat will be October 18, 2012, featuring Silvia Bindelli, a computer science engineer who will discuss her work as an engineering software release coordinator.Needs The open source community backbone is comprised of a legion of fiercely dedicated volunteers. Still, the needs are many. In addition to the obvious need for technical talent – developers, QA, designers and the like – there is also a need for writers, bug triage, organizers and everything in between. If you’d like to join the Ubuntu Women, contact anyone on the leadership team, or check out the #ubuntu-women and #ubuntu-women-project IRC channels. Gagan shows his shooting prowess in men’s 10m air rifle singles event

first_imgThe day Gagan was waiting for riveting rivalries in sports usually have to do with people from different countries. Be it Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal or, if you move to cricket, Sachin Tendulkar vs Shane Warne, or Mike Tyson against Evander Holyfield in boxing – it is the rivalries that keep fans glued to the action. Cut to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, you have two Indian shooters who keep having a go at each other in the range, and only one wins. On Wednesday, as Gagan Narang and Abhinav Bindra unpacked their air rifles at the Karni Singh range in Tughlakabad, it was clear that revenge was on Gagan’s mind. For almost two years now, Gagan has been smarting after having missed out on a place in the final at the Beijing Olympics. A score of 595 then meant he was not in the final and Bindra got in to make history. If one thought Gagan would have been happy a countryman won gold, you’re right. At the same time, once he did not do well in the other two events in Beijing, he was a haunted man. He kept talking about how one point made all the difference as he could not make it to the final. Gagan has been waiting for this day for long.As one who threatened to pull out of the Games as he had been denied the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, his showing till now has been sublime. Agreed, Gagan came into shooting much later than Bindra, but this India vs India contest in the shooting range always generates high voltage stuff. It’s not every day that a shooter scores 600/600 and is still told by the international shooting federation (ISSF) this it is not recognised as a world mark. When asked about their rivalry, the two shooters keep mum “as shooting is an individual sport”.advertisementHowever, since a healthy rivalry always motivates one to do better, there can be just one reason why Gagan cranked himself up like this: To prove a point to the Olympic gold medallist. For long, Gagan has felt he doesn’t get recognised like Bindra or some other athlete despite all his feats. It’s a complex only he can dispel. But the bigger thrill will again come from the Asian Games in Guangzhou next month, where he will be competing with Bindra. It’s strange how these two men still shake hands after the event gets over!last_img read more

CWG scam: CBI likely to question Kalmadi tomorrow

first_imgSacked Chairman of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Suresh Kalmadi is likely to be questioned by CBI on Wednesday in connection with Queen’s Baton Relay scam after the agency received fresh papers from the UK.Former OC Chairman has been called by the agency sleuths on Wednesday to clarify some issues which have surfaced during the visit of two-member team of the agency to London in connection with the alleged irregularities in hiring AM Films and AM Car and Van Hire Limited during QBR held in 2009, highly placed sources said.Kalmadi did not respond to SMSes seeking his reaction about the development.A two-member team of the agency comprising Additional Director V K Gupta and DIG S K Palsania has managed to speak to the London-based owner of both the companies — Ashish Patel — who has given a lot of information and documents with regard to the allegedly overvalued deal. The documents and records made available by Patel will be provided to the CBI officially in reply to their Letter Rogatory issued to British Authorities, they said.”The British authorities were very cooperative during the entire visit. They have agreed to provide all the records and documents which we have identified,” an official who did not wish to be named said. These documents, officers say, provide some “clinching” details about the payments made to the two companies allegedly with the sanction of Kalmadi, they said.CBI sources said the team now wants Kalmadi to reply to the new piece of information on the monetary transactions with the two companies. The agency had called Kalmadi who has informed them that since he was out of country, he can appear only after April 19 to answer its queries.advertisementSources said the agency had also gathered evidence against Ashish Patel, owner of the firms for allegedly manipulating certain documents to get undue benefits from the deal with the help of some OC officials.”It is alleged that in relation to the QBR held on October 29, 2009 the OC awarded the work of transportation to the company namely AM Car and Van Hire Ltd, owned by Ashish Patel, at exorbitantly high rates…the work was awarded to AM Car and Van Hire Ltd without following the standard tender process,” the FIR registered by CBI said. The work was given to the firm on the false promise made by it that it was on the panel of Indian High Commission, London, it said.CBI has registered a total of nine FIRs in different cases related to alleged corruption in the run up to the mega sporting extravaganza held here between October 3-14 last year.- With PTI inputslast_img read more

FIR against wrestler Sushil Kumar, supporters for brawl

first_imgNew Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) Olympic-medallist Sushil Kumar was today booked by the Delhi Police in connection with his supporters clashing with those of rival wrestler Parveen Rana at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here, police said.Kumar and his supporters have booked under IPC section 341 (wrongful restraint) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), the latter attracting an imprisonment of up to one year or a monetary fine of Rs 1,000 or both, police officials said. The supporters of the two wrestlers yesterday engaged in an ugly clash and came to blows during the selection trial for the Gold Coast Games, to be held in April next year.Kumar had won all his bouts but things took an ugly turn when Rana, after losing to the former in the semifinal clash, claimed that the decorated wrestlers supporters beat him and his elder brother “for daring to take the ring” against him. This triggered a clash between the followers of the two which was even captured on cameras, leading to the police today registering a case against Kumar and his supporters, senior police officials said.Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa confirmed that an FIR has been lodged but the reason behind the brawl was being probed. He said the police have not received any complaint against Rana or his followers from Kumar or his camp.Kumar had yesterday claimed that he was bitten by Rana during the bout.”… he bit me but no problem, it might be his tactics to stop me from performing well. All this is a part of sports,” Sushil had told reporters after the bouts.advertisement”Whatever happened here was wrong. I condemn it. There was mutual respect after the fight ended,” he added.Incidentally, the 34-year-old Kumar had beaten Rana in the Commonwealth Championships final in South Africa a few weeks back. Also, Rana was among the three wrestlers who gave a walkover to Kumar in the National Championships last month owing to the “respect” they had for the veteran.Rana yesterday alleged that Kumars supporters gave death threats to him and dared him to participate in the upcoming Pro Wrestling League. Feds cant solve Indigenous issues on their own says Clint Davis

first_imgInFocusThe chair of the Labrador Capital Strategy Trust (LCST) says the issues facing Indigenous communities run so deep Ottawa alone will not be able to solve them.Clint Davis leads the LCST, an organization that works to build economic and socioeconomic strategies to benefit the Nunatsiavut says private investment will be needed too, if the economic outlook for Indigenous people is going to change.“There has been support in this budget for infrastructure and the gap is significant. It’s at least $30 if not $40 billion and the government of Canada will not be able to address this gap on its own,” Davis told InFocus Host Melissa Ridgen.“The only way you can do this is to create the right private partnerships, be it public – private partnerships or some other type of model, to attract private capital too address this. And I didn’t see anything like that in the budget unfortunately.”But not everyone agreed with Davis who joined analyst Pam Palmater, Joseph Quesnel on InFocus to talk about the federal budget that was delivered Tuesday in Ottawa.Joseph Quensel, a Metis political and public policy analyst who has worked extensively in Indigenous governance and economic development, thought there were some good points to the budget, including funds to help Indigenous entrepreneurs.“With First Nation entrepreneurs, like any entrepreneurs, the issue is access to capital,” Quesnel said. “First Nations more than anyone are faced with that (hurdle) because of the land ownership restrictions. They can’t use land as collateral. First Nations need capital, this budget goes a long way for providing that.“The First Nation Major Projects Coalition has applauded the budget in terms of providing over a $100 million for First Nation communities to secure large resource projects.”The $100 million dollars has been allotted to establish an Indigenous growth fund to encourage investments in Indigenous led businesses by Aboriginal Financial institutions.Another $50 million over five years will go towards the Metis Capital corporations to support the start-up of small to medium sized businesses.Pam Palmater, a Mi’kmaq lawyer, professor, activist and political pundit. She has crossed the landscape fighting legal issues impacting First Nations including poverty, housing, child and family services, treaty rights and education.Palmater was critical of the lack of funding for women and children.“(Liberals) tout it as being about the children but in fact this budget is lacking a gender-based analysis, an Indigenous and human rights analysis, because you have this $1.2 billion in funding for Jordan’s Principle, however it’s flat funding,” she said. “There is no increase or accounting for population growth, and we’re the fastest growing population.“And we have to remember, this is no gift. They don’t get to be patted on the back for it. They’ve been dragged to this budget kicking and screaming by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal and a fifth non-compliance order so this is nothing to celebrate.”Palmater also noted there’s nothing to address the CFS crisis affecting Indigenous families across the country. All three panelists were displeased with the lack of new housing initiatives but applauded the progress so far, and continued efforts to have all Boil Water Advisories lifted by 2021 on First Nations, replaced with clean drinking water [email protected]last_img read more
