They liked the idea to invite family and friends to stay over and who knows, maybe one day they would have kids and it would certainly be nice for them to bring their friends to play at the weekend. They didn’t know what would happen in the future, but then, who does? We started designing the house and suddenly the family grew.Save this picture!© Macarena AlvarezSave this picture!Lower floor planSave this picture!© Macarena AlvarezWas it cheap? The house was relatively cheap for Chilean building standards. Yet, of course not as cheap as the owners would have hoped. The construction cost was approximately 950 USD/sqm.Save this picture!© Macarena AlvarezIt was as usual necessary to negotiate between technical quality, general comfort, and costs. Thus, the project for us was mostly about constantly assessing how to achieve a construction that is different from ordinary vernacular but with resources typical of it. For each element, the question arises, and for each question, we were eventually challenged to find a way to decide.Save this picture!© Macarena AlvarezWas it easy to build? Despite (or precisely because of?) the house’s rather simple appearance, the construction process had a few challenges. The team (owners/contractor/architect) were constantly reviewing the original design and discussing adjustments that could ease the construction process and/or the future house’s maintenance.Save this picture!© Macarena AlvarezA timber structure supports the house from the outside. Standard materials were used as the envelope: painted fiber concrete, aluminum windows frame, and an asphalt membrane on the roof. However, there was a particular concern with the installation of a continuous layer of insulation around the house for thermal comfort. The interior is mostly cladded in knotless pinewood, drywalls are used in the smaller rooms, and porcelain tiles in bathrooms. A 40 cm level is marked changing the direction of timber battens throughout the house.Save this picture!© Macarena AlvarezSave this picture!East elevationSave this picture!© Macarena AlvarezAnd what about the Triangular Shaped Roof? That was the easy part, however, the owners also wanted to avoid structural elements in the interior space for maximum freedom. To achieve this, we added a couple of exterior cantilevered beams over both long façades. On top of that, the beams function as eaves and also establish the house’s form.Save this picture!© Macarena AlvarezSpaces & sizes, not programs. The overall configuration of the house is made up of a large open floor plan split by two interior modules placed perpendicularly. Each module has a small room and a bathroom inside and produces an upper loft area above it. The house can be simply read as two large spaces, two small spaces, two upper loft areas, and two bathrooms that allow for a number of potential uses. This is the way in which the design responded to the initial indeterminacy of the program – futureproofing the building?Save this picture!© Macarena AlvarezIf they want, they could set up a huge bedroom and include the other rooms as a walk-in closet + en-suite bathroom. They could sleep in a small room and use the larger room as a home office, a library, or a children’s playroom. They could also place the home-office (if they want to have one) at one of the upper loft areas. Leave the other loft area as a guest room… etc.The hypothesis is that programs are primarily defined by objects, hence just by moving furniture and appliances, they will be able to reprogram the different spaces.Save this picture!© Macarena AlvarezThe end – Analytically. My participation in the project probably made the house a little more expensive and a little more difficult to build. In exchange, I contributed to the realization of a house open to future changes in the program. A fair exchange?Optimistically. Finally, they got a beach house at a reasonable price, and with the triangular roof, they had in mind from day one. Their daughter was born before the house was finished, so we decided to remove both stairs’ first step and leave the upper loft areas out of her reach. They can now work on their garden and let their lives take over the house.Save this picture!© Macarena AlvarezProject gallerySee allShow lessA New Web-Based Archive Provides Navigable 3D Models and Drawings of Selected ProjectsArchitecture NewsPowerhouse, Mecanoo and SHoP Join Design Team Reimagining Rotterdam’s RijnhavenArchitecture News Share Year:  Photographs ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/952651/house-sp-e-studioro Clipboard “COPY” CopyAbout this officeRodrigo Valenzuela JerezOfficeFollowProductWood#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesOn InstagramOn FacebookChilePublished on December 07, 2020Cite: “House SP / Rodrigo Valenzuela Jerez” [Casa SP / Rodrigo Valenzuela Jerez] 07 Dec 2020. Joe Randle and the Halo Effect

first_imgJoseph Randle takes a handoff from Tony Romo (USATSI)Joseph Randle takes a handoff from Tony Romo (USATSI)It shouldn’t be surprising when someone in the public eye — a 22-year-old no less — does something silly and/or illegal. We equate success in a profession and a high-paying job with a sturdy moral compass which actually makes us dumber than the folks committing the crimes. And yet, when it’s one of our own, somebody we waved wheat for on Saturdays, it always is at least a little bit surprising. The Joe Randle theft story is sad, yes, but it was also very weird. Randle, as you know, got arrested for trying to steal cologne and underwear from a Dillard’s in Frisco. Then on Tuesday, according to Cowboys Ride For Free Randle’s dad called a Dallas radio station to defend his son.“My son is not a thief, okay? He was just trying to get his baby out of there because she was clowning pretty bad. All he was going to do is take ‎the baby out and then he was going to come back and take care of his business.” Then Randle himself debunked that theory, according to the Dallas Morning News.“All right, y’all got me,” was his first thought after he was confronted, he told Frisco police, according to his arrest report. Randle said he didn’t pay because he didn’t want to take the time to do it and told police he “should have just kept walking to his car if he knew he would be arrested,” the report states. My question is why is pops going on the radio in Dallas to defend a story his son didn’t even tell? The worst part about all of this is that Randle bragged just a few weeks ago about having multiple pairs of $1,000 Gucci shoes.Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames. There are a lot of motives for why Randle would steal the Dillard’s gear. One is that maybe he — and I’m going to try and make this sound not sarcastic — bought too many pairs of $1,000 shoes and didn’t have the money to pay. Maybe he thought “hey, I play for the Cowboys, we’re 5-1, I can get away with this.”Maybe both, maybe neither, I don’t know. The reality, though, is that this was not a professional move. This was a Herschel Sims move. And it’s one Randle will be held accountable for as he should be.As I’ve written dozens of times we don’t know know these dudes and never will and as such we shouldn’t submerge ourselves in what The Economist refers to as the Halo Effect. It is the phenomenon whereby we assume that because people are good at doing A they will be good at doing B, C and D (or the reverse—because they are bad at doing A they will be bad at doing B, C and D).Because Randle is fast and shifty on a football pitch doesn’t mean he’s smart or ethical and yet I often link the two (maybe I’m alone in that…maybe I’m just writing this post to myself?) He’s a good football player so he must be smart, I say, or at least think, to myself. I think the opposite as well if I don’t catch myself. This is what I’d expect from Alex Cate, I posit.Silliness! There is grace to be found, however, as fans of athletes and other humans. I want guys like Justin Blackmon and Joseph Randle (and I’m not equating their crimes) to succeed both on and off the field. It’s just sometimes difficult to remember that one doesn’t affect the other. If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)With just a few weeks remaining until the College Football Playoff field is decided, the Big 12 is still up in the air. Oklahoma is the favorite to win the conference and make the four team field, but there are still scenarios in which Baylor and Oklahoma State can capture the conference crown. Three games—Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Baylor-TCU, and Baylor-Texas—will decide the conference champion. ESPN’s Max Olson tweeted out a handy, simple chart explaining all of the possible scenarios. So who wins the Big 12? Here’s the updated and much simpler chart. pic.twitter.com/o4TdzjPICH— Max Olson (@max_olson) November 22, 2015After last year’s debacle with Baylor and TCU, the Big 12 made head-to-head result the first tiebreaker to name a conference champion, so if Oklahoma wins Bedlam, it will take home the crown due to its win over Baylor. If Oklahoma State wins Bedlam, it need either TCU or Texas to knock off the Bears. Otherwise, Baylor will win the league. We’re pretty excited to see it all play out.last_img read more

Musharraf admits JeM carried out attacks in India during his tenure

first_imgIslamabad: Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf has admitted that Masood Azhar-led Jaish-e-Mohammed carried out attacks in India during his tenure on the instructions of the intelligence agencies. Musharraf, 75, who is currently in Dubai, said that the Pakistan government’s crackdown on the JeM, which also tried to assassinate him twice, was a good move. The JeM recently claimed responsibility for the February 14 Pulwama attack that left 40 CRPF personnel dead, increasing tensions between India and Pakistan. Last month, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi during an interview with CNN said that Azhar is in Pakistan, but the government can act against him only if India presents “solid” and “inalienable” evidence that can stand in a court of law. Also Read – How a psychopath killer hid behind the mask of a devout laity!Pakistan military, however, denied the terror group’s presence in the country. Amid mounting international pressure after the Pulwama attack, Pakistan on Tuesday detained 44 members of the banned militant outfits, including Azhar’s son and brother. “This is a good move. I have always said that the JeM is a terrorist organisation and they only had carried out a suicide attack in an attempt to assassinate me. Action should be taken against them. I am happy the Musharraf, who also served as Pakistan’s army chief, said that the action against the JeM should have been taken earlier.last_img read more

Pujara should be India’s number four in ODIs: Sourav

first_imgKolkata: As the conundrum for India’s number four slot in the batting order continues, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has a unique suggestion for the same — Cheteshwar Pujara. India have tried several batsmen at the same position but are yet to finalise on one name. But according to Ganguly, Pujara could be the answer to the puzzle. “See, I am going to say something that might not sound believable to many viewers and a lot of people might laugh at my suggestion,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by a news channel. Also Read – Andy Murray to make Grand Slam return at Australian OpenHowever, Ganguly did admit that Pujara’s fielding could be a cause for concern but his prowess with the bat could help India. “For me, Cheteshwar Pujara should be India’s No. 4 in ODIs. His fielding might be a bit weak but he is a very good batsman. I know people will be shocked by my claim but if you want a quality batsman who is better than the options India has tried off late, I think Pujara is the best choice,” he explained. “I believe Pujara has the capability to perform the role that Rahul Dravid used to for India in ODIs earlier,” he said. Also Read – Fast bowler Behrendorff to undergo spinal surgery”But this would have been my decision and I know a lot of people won’t agree with me on this. Sometimes, you need solidity in one-day cricket and Pujara provides you with that in ample measure. Especially, when your top three batsmen are so capable and are scoring a mountain of runs,” he further said. Another area which is still up for grabs is the second choice wicket-keeper. In that position, Ganguly backed Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik despite the southpaw’s indifferent series against Australia. Explaining the reason behind his choice, the 44-year-old said: “I would back Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik,” he added. “The latter has played a lot of cameos but we haven’t seen him play a big innings while pulling the team out of trouble like Kedar Jadhav does for India. So, if I have to choose one amongst the two, I would go for Pant as he is a player of the future.” “But it is quite possible that none of either Pant or Karthik are selected for the World Cup. The way they have backed Vijay Shankar recently, it is possible that none of the two frontline backup wicket-keepers will make it to England. So in the event that Shankar is chosen, only one amongst K L Rahul, Pant and Karthik will be selected,” Ganguly concluded.last_img read more

Modi-Shah duo responsible for promoting ‘mobocracy’, damaging cultural identity of states: Cong

first_imgNew Delhi: The Congress Wednesday condemned the violence during Amit Shah’s roadshow in Kolkata while accusing the Narendra Modi-Shah duo of promoting “mobocracy” in the country and damaging the cultural identity of the states. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi also condemned the desecration of the statue of national icon and social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar during the violence, terming it a “shameful act”. “A new politics where ‘mobocracy’ is being actively encouraged and abetted by the ruling party — the BJP — in the country has gained ground in the past five years. Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah-led BJP are squarely responsible for systematically damaging the cultural identity of each state in India. The Modi-Shah duo are responsible for promoting mobocracy in the country,” he told reporters. Also Read – 2019 most peaceful festive season for J&K: Jitendra Singh Singhvi alleged that the federal structure, respect for regional aspirations, culture, language, food habits and the identity of indigenous people are under attack by the BJP in every state of the country. “This negative politics of ‘destruction, demolition and discretion’ are methodically vitiating the political atmosphere of the country. The BJP wants to exert its monolithic supremacy and bigoted agenda on each state, thus weakening the federal polity,” he alleged. Also Read – Personal life needs to be respected: Cong on reports of Rahul’s visit abroad Singhvi said “federal fascism is embedded in the BJP’s DNA and the power hungry Modi-Shah duo are hell-bent on bulldozing the cultural identity of states.” He said the Congress strongly condemns the violent discretion of the statue of national icon Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, a great educationist who changed the Bengali alphabet, sanskrit scholar and reformer who brought in the widow remarriage act and fought for women’s education. “We are deeply pained that such a shameful incident took place,” he said. Singhvi said Congress president Rahul Gandhi has taken upon himself to protect the culture, identity and language of the various states that make India. “This is one of the strongest reasons why Rahul Gandhi is fighting elections from both north India (Amethi) and south India (Wayanad) so that all parts of India feel united under the common umbrella of the Congress party,” he added. The Congress leader alleged that disrespect for national icons and hegemony of its own ideology was reflective of the BJP’s mindset and recalled how BJP H Raja had pledged to destroy the statue of social reformer Periyar in Chennai. BJP general secretary Ram Madhav “actively justified pulling down statues, but no action was taken against him”, he claimed. Singhvi alleged that a bust of national icon B R Ambedkar was found splashed with red paint in north Chennai and in February this year, members of a fringe right wing group associated with the Sangh Parivar “shamelessly” re-enacted the scene of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination by shooting his effigy with an air pistol after garlanding a picture of his assassin Nathuram Godse in Uttar Pradesh. He said the current situation was the result of “condemnable policies” of the Modi government for various states, including not granting special status to Andhra Pradesh, and “systematic mauling” of the federal structure as had happened during government formations in Goa, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur. “The Modi government’s politics of division was in full form, after it brought in the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), which was opposed tooth and nail in many states of the northeast. This was a direct assault on the indigenous people of the region,” Singhvi said. In Jammu and Kashmir too, he said this government promised Rs 80,000 crore, but gave only 31 per cent of the package and so was the case in Bihar, where a total of Rs 1.25 lakh crore was promised but nothing reached the state. “PM Modi, who paraded co-operative federalism as an ‘article of faith’, hasn’t even released the funds to states, with reports stating that the Centre has achieved only a third of devolution, thereby starving states of funds needed for vital welfare schemes like education and health,” he alleged.last_img read more

Credit: Ris Twigg | Assistant Photo EditorThe No. 7 Ohio State men’s volleyball team will advance to the MIVA tournament semifinals after sweeping Quincy in three straight sets Saturday. The Hawks came into the match thoroughly outmatched, having lost 3-0 the two times they played the Buckeyes during the regular season and posting a 12-18 regular-season overall record and 0-14 conference record compared to the top-seeded Buckeyes. The Hawks managed to stay a few only a few steps behind the Buckeyes in the first two sets, but were left in the dust in the third when Ohio State ended the set with more than double Quincy’s points.Though Quincy kept close on Ohio State’s heels in the first set, the majority of Quincy points were a result of Ohio State miscues. Quincy senior outside hitter Anthony Winters carried his team through the first set with seven of the team’s 12 kills, but his team still fell in the set 25-22. The Buckeyes ensured the second set was not nearly as close, picking up offensive momentum and pulling away with a 25-18 win. Winters was unable to maintain the offensive pressure he showcased in the first set due in part to Ohio State’s hitting percentage reaching a match-high .476.In the third set, the Hawks lost whatever hope they had of a comeback when the Buckeyes routed Quincy for the 25-12 set win to clinch the win. The Hawks fell apart, scoring half of their points and receiving the other half from Buckeye errors. The Hawks — the No. 8 seed in the MIVA — are eliminated from the conference tournament while Ohio State will compete against the No. 4-seeded Lewis Flyers at St. John Arena Wednesday in the semifinals. read more
