New York woman meets baby she gave birth to in COVID-19 coma

first_imgA woman in New York has met for the first time the baby she gave birth to in early April while she was on a ventilator in an artificial coma because she had a serious form of COVID-19.Yanira Soriano, 36, was intubated for 11 days in an intensive care unit before recovering “miraculously” to welcome her fourth child, her doctor told AFP.”We really did not know if she was going to survive at all,” said Benjamin Schwartz, head of obstetrics and gynecology at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. “Most patients on a ventilator don’t survive.” But she finally turned a corner and was released from hospital in a wheelchair to the applause of dozens of health care workers on Wednesday. Her husband, who wore a mask like everyone else there, gently handed her their baby boy, Walter.Soriano was eight months pregnant when she became infected, around the same time as her husband, who had a less serious case and was able to remain at home. She was hospitalized and placed on oxygen but her condition quickly deteriorated.Doctors feared that a lack of oxygen might put the baby in danger, but also that the pressure from her large belly might prevent her lungs from functioning well. They just had time to tell her they wanted to perform an emergency cesarean section before she was placed in an artificial coma — with Soriano urging them to do whatever it took to save her baby. “The mother knew that that was happening, but then got really bad right before the section was performed and ended up on a ventilator, and not being awake to the birth of a child,” said Schwartz. The baby, who was only slightly premature, is doing well. He was transferred to a children’s hospital in New York, where he was picked up by his father on Tuesday. In some rare instances, babies born to mothers with COVID-19 tested positive themselves when they were checked shortly after birth — but this was not the case for little Walter, whose test came out clear. The pandemic has extracted an especially heavy toll in New York, where more than 11,000 have died statewide. The prognosis for patients who need to go on ventilators because their lungs are failing is poor, with only around 20 percent surviving the ordeal, according to the state’s governor.Topics :last_img read more

Google Reader Can Now Track Changes to Any Website – Even if it Can’t Find a Feed

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… frederic lardinois Google just announced an interesting update to Google Reader. Google’s online feed reader now allows you to track changes on any page – even those that don’t feature an RSS feed. Google will create its own custom feeds for these sites and update the feed whenever it notices a change. Google Reader will display a short snippet of the page changes in the RSS feed.Until today, Google Reader would simply respond with an error message if you tried to subscribe to a site that didn’t offer an RSS feed. Now, Google will simply create a new feed for the site and track updates. It’s not clear how often Google plans to ping these sites, however. Thanks to this, you can easily track the latest discounts on Macys.com or updates to Zillow.com’s homepage. As far as we were able to see, Google Reader creates very clean RSS feeds for these items. While Google doesn’t make it obvious, you can find the newly created feed by clicking “show details” in Google Reader. Thanks to this, you can subscribe to this new feed in any feed reader and not just in Google Reader. There are, of course, a number of other sites that also allow you to track when something changes on a site. ChangeDetection.com, for example, is a popular online service that will alert you whenever a page changes. Unlike Google Reader’s new feature, ChangeDetection.com also gives you a very detailed overview of of what exactly changed and what the page looked like before. The service also offers an RSS feed of these changes. FINALS DAY AT NSW STATE CUP!

first_imgAll finals and results will be updated as regularly as possible throughout the day: MENS OPEN FINALS: The Mens Open quarter finals see Wests facing the potential giant-killer in Manly, who have shown they can rise to an occasion over the tournament. Lismore, widely regarded as the strongest country side, will need to put in a strong performance to get past the experienced Easts side, although a potential semi final against Wests looms ahead. On their form in the final round match, many would be tipping Parramatta to make it through to the semis and the match between Canterbury and Penrith could go either way. Canterbury certainly challenged Wests in their final round match, but Penrith have performed consistently over the weekend and will rate themselves as a strong chance. The quarter finals went as expected, although some may not have called Penrith to make it past Canterbury. Penrith’s win sees them match up again against Parramatta who they upset in the pool matches. Western Suburbs will face Lismore who gave them a tough match in the pool rounds. Anything could happen come semi finals! With a side that includes several Gold Coast players, Lismore reversed their earlier defeat to grab a position in the main event against Parramatta, who easily accounted for Penrith 7-0. Parramatta looked strong, also reversing their earlier round match loss to Penrith and the grand final is shaping up to be a tight match. SF1- Winner QF1 v Winner QF2: Lismore (6) def Western Suburbs (5) SF2- Winner QF3 v Winner QF4: Parramatta (7) def Penrith (0) It was on for young and old in the Mens grand final. One of the best displays of Touch and also sportsmanship that had been seen the entire tournament. While there was that element of showmanship and fire that often comes with Mens Open, It never ventured into dirty and both sides were led by touch legends. For Parramatta it was Mark Boland, in his 19th year playing Mens Open who helped Parramatta take an early lead, his diving touch down showing nothing of his age. For Lismore, it was Mook Harrington Senior, who ran the length of the field from Australian Open representative Matt Curran to score. The young didn’t wait too long to get in on the act either, Parramatta and Australian rising star Troy Malcolm throwing a brilliant pass to get Parramatta ahead again before Mook Junior followed his father and scored for Lismore. After one final diving touch down Lismore were crowned State Cup Champions, the first ever country side to win the title in State Cup history…since 1977! GF- Winner SF1 v Winner SF2: Lismore (4) def Parramatta (3) Player of the Final- Nathan Jones (Lismore) WOMENS OPEN FINALS: The Womens Open finals are wide open, with final round matches on Sunday morning determining final positions. After the final round of matches Cronulla snuck through to the semis with a draw against Albion Park. They will need to improve to challenge Canterbury who beat them 5-1 in the round matches. SF1- 1st v 4th: Canterbury (3) def Cronulla (1) SF2- 2nd v 3rd Easts (4) def Wests (3) drop-off Matches between East and Canterbury are fast becoming tight and tough struggles that never fail to disappoint. After their recent Sydney Championships grand final meeting and then the final second draw in their pool match at State Cup; the Grand Final also followed the same titanic struggle of a track. Canterbury led for the entire match, remarkably holding Easts scoreless for a 1-0 win. Not to be understated considering the quality of the Easts side, which contained many current Australian Open and Junior representatives. For Canterbury this win was sweet especially after conceding to Easts in the pool match and giving up the lead in the Sydney Championships grand final. Fleetscape Raises USD 400 Mn of Capital

first_imgzoom Capital provider to the maritime industry Fleetscape Capital Holdings Limited (Fleetscape) has collected USD 400 million in its first investment capital raise. The capital was raised from funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management, Fleetscape said.“With this capital raise, Fleetscape has become one of the leading alternative capital providers to the maritime industries with a global investment mandate,” the company commented.Fleetscape is targeting investments across various segments of the maritime space, including shipping and offshore, by providing leases, loans and preferred equity. As explained, the strong investor appetite shown in Fleetscape’s fund raising reflects the realisation that access to capital in the maritime industry has been restricted over the past several years.“There has been a fundamental shift in the way that this capital-intensive industry funds itself, with alternative structured capital providers becoming an integral and substantial part of funding commitments,” Fleetscape further noted.“We are well positioned to become the preferred source for solution-oriented alternative capital provision to shipping and offshore services companies worldwide,” C. Tobias Backer of Fleetscape said.“We believe that a favourable investment climate exists for our alternative credit strategy, as the maritime sector continues to suffer from the retrenchment of its traditional capital sources. By combining Oaktree’s deep history of investing in the maritime space and our experience in structuring tailor-made transactions, we believe that Fleetscape will be a leading creative, flexible and innovative investment partner for the shipping and offshore industries for the long-term,” Guillaume Bayol, Senior Vice President at Oaktree, said.last_img read more

Clarett returns to Ohio State for classes

Former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett has enrolled in classes at the university for the second summer session, which began on Monday. “Maurice Clarett has been granted reentry into The Ohio State University, following a review by the College of Education and Human Ecology, where he was originally enrolled,” OSU director of media relations Jim Lynch said in a statement.Clarett was released from the Toledo Correctional Institution in April after serving on 3 ½ years of a 7 ½ year sentence for aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. In negotiation with his early release, Clarett was ordered to spend four to six months at a dormitory step-down center on Alum Creek Drive. Inmates are permitted leave to work or attend classes.Clarett was quickly recognized on campus. “This is a surreal feeling to be back at Ohio State in such a supportive environment,” Clarett said in a statement. “I have looked forward to being back in school and I’m doing my best to fit in with other students. I don’t want to be a distraction or nuisance to the football team or to students on campus.”Clarett might be back in the classroom, but he won’t be making an appearance on the field. After the Buckeyes’ 2002 National Championship, Clarett signed with an agent, forfeiting any remaining eligibility. read more

Mens Volleyball Ohio State advances to MIVA semifinals after 30 beatdown of

Ohio State junior setter Sanil Thomas (3) sets the ball to redshirt junior middle blocker Blake Leeson (11) during the Buckeyes’ 3-1 win against Loyola on March 29. Credit: Ris Twigg | Assistant Photo EditorThe No. 7 Ohio State men’s volleyball team will advance to the MIVA tournament semifinals after sweeping Quincy in three straight sets Saturday. The Hawks came into the match thoroughly outmatched, having lost 3-0 the two times they played the Buckeyes during the regular season and posting a 12-18 regular-season overall record and 0-14 conference record compared to the top-seeded Buckeyes. The Hawks managed to stay a few only a few steps behind the Buckeyes in the first two sets, but were left in the dust in the third when Ohio State ended the set with more than double Quincy’s points.Though Quincy kept close on Ohio State’s heels in the first set, the majority of Quincy points were a result of Ohio State miscues. Quincy senior outside hitter Anthony Winters carried his team through the first set with seven of the team’s 12 kills, but his team still fell in the set 25-22. The Buckeyes ensured the second set was not nearly as close, picking up offensive momentum and pulling away with a 25-18 win. Winters was unable to maintain the offensive pressure he showcased in the first set due in part to Ohio State’s hitting percentage reaching a match-high .476.In the third set, the Hawks lost whatever hope they had of a comeback when the Buckeyes routed Quincy for the 25-12 set win to clinch the win. The Hawks fell apart, scoring half of their points and receiving the other half from Buckeye errors. The Hawks — the No. 8 seed in the MIVA — are eliminated from the conference tournament while Ohio State will compete against the No. 4-seeded Lewis Flyers at St. John Arena Wednesday in the semifinals. read more
