first_imgBrace for potentially devastating typhoon approaching PH – NDRRMC At the 27th SEA Games in Myanmar in 2013 the Lao team won two bronze medals while at the 25th SEA Games in Vientiane back in 2009, the team won only a solitary bronze medal on home soil.Next year, the Lao Amateur Athletics Federation will support the staging of track and field events at the 11th National Games to be hosted by Xieng Khuang province. Sithixay said strong athletic teams from Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia were ready to compete in more than 40 track and field events at the 29th games. The best hopes are female runners, Manivanh Chanthavong and Lodkeo Inthakoumman, both are certainties for the team given their past international experience. Lodkeo is currently a professional runner of Laos and she succeeded in the women’s 21km running event at Vientiane International Half Marathon in March. At the 17th Asean University Games in Indonesia in 2014, Lodkeo won a gold medal in the women’s 10,000 metres event, a silver medal in the women’s 5000 metres event and a bronze medal in the women’s 1500 metres event.Manivanh will no doubt compete in the women’s 100 metres hurdles along with shot-put, discus, javelin, long jump, 200 metres and high jump events at the 29th SEA Games, while Lodkeo’s favoured events are the women’s 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 metre events. At the 18th Asean University Games in Singapore last July the National University of Laos athletics team won two gold medals in the men’s 110 metre hurdles and women’s 800 metres.ADVERTISEMENT LATEST STORIES View comments SEA Games in Calabarzon safe, secure – Solcom chief Trending Articles PLAY LIST 00:50Trending Articles01:35Panelo suggests discounted SEA Games tickets for students02:49World-class track facilities installed at NCC for SEA Games03:07PH billiards team upbeat about gold medal chances in SEA Games05:25PH boxing team determined to deliver gold medals for PH03:04Filipino athletes share their expectations for 2019 SEA Games00:45Onyok Velasco see bright future for PH boxing in Olympics02:25PH women’s volleyball team motivated to deliver in front of hometown crowd01:27Filipino athletes get grand send-off ahead of SEA Games Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. Former ServiCom employee warns about unofficial fundraising drives

first_imgSYDNEY, N.S. — People planning on donating funds to help the almost 700 call centre employees in Cape Breton who lost their jobs last week are being warned to be careful about where they send their money.Tanya Wilneff, a former manager at the ServiCom Canada facility in Sydney, says the workers have yet to endorse any centralized fundraising efforts.Wilneff says she has spotted at least six GoFundMe sites that purport to be raising money for ServiCom employees — who lost their jobs last Thursday as part of a bankruptcy protection process involving the company’s U.S. parent. She says those sites may have been set up by well-meaning people, but it is often difficult to tell if they are legitimate.Wilneff says former ServiCom employees are expected to decide on how fundraising should be handled when a meeting is held later today in Sydney.Meanwhile, Wilneff says she and her colleagues have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from friends and neighbours. The Canadian Presslast_img read more

US government says shutdown shouldnt stop Keystone hearing

first_imgHELENA, Mont. — Justice Department attorneys and the Canadian company behind the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline say the U.S. government shutdown shouldn’t delay a court hearing on a judge’s decision to halt construction.Justice Department attorney Bridget McNeil said in a court filing Monday that government lawyers are prohibited from working except in emergencies during the shutdown. But, she adds, federal attorneys’ participation in the hearing next Monday in U.S. District Court in Great Falls isn’t necessary.TransCanada attorneys previously told U.S. District Judge Brian Morris the company is prepared to hold the hearing without the government being represented. In November, Morris ordered an injunction prohibiting pipeline construction activities. TransCanada plans to argue the order should be stayed while an appeal is pending with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The Associated Presslast_img read more

Musharraf admits JeM carried out attacks in India during his tenure

first_imgIslamabad: Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf has admitted that Masood Azhar-led Jaish-e-Mohammed carried out attacks in India during his tenure on the instructions of the intelligence agencies. Musharraf, 75, who is currently in Dubai, said that the Pakistan government’s crackdown on the JeM, which also tried to assassinate him twice, was a good move. The JeM recently claimed responsibility for the February 14 Pulwama attack that left 40 CRPF personnel dead, increasing tensions between India and Pakistan. Last month, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi during an interview with CNN said that Azhar is in Pakistan, but the government can act against him only if India presents “solid” and “inalienable” evidence that can stand in a court of law. Also Read – How a psychopath killer hid behind the mask of a devout laity!Pakistan military, however, denied the terror group’s presence in the country. Amid mounting international pressure after the Pulwama attack, Pakistan on Tuesday detained 44 members of the banned militant outfits, including Azhar’s son and brother. “This is a good move. I have always said that the JeM is a terrorist organisation and they only had carried out a suicide attack in an attempt to assassinate me. Action should be taken against them. I am happy the Musharraf, who also served as Pakistan’s army chief, said that the action against the JeM should have been taken earlier.last_img read more

Modi-Shah duo responsible for promoting ‘mobocracy’, damaging cultural identity of states: Cong

first_imgNew Delhi: The Congress Wednesday condemned the violence during Amit Shah’s roadshow in Kolkata while accusing the Narendra Modi-Shah duo of promoting “mobocracy” in the country and damaging the cultural identity of the states. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi also condemned the desecration of the statue of national icon and social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar during the violence, terming it a “shameful act”. “A new politics where ‘mobocracy’ is being actively encouraged and abetted by the ruling party — the BJP — in the country has gained ground in the past five years. Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah-led BJP are squarely responsible for systematically damaging the cultural identity of each state in India. The Modi-Shah duo are responsible for promoting mobocracy in the country,” he told reporters. Also Read – 2019 most peaceful festive season for J&K: Jitendra Singh Singhvi alleged that the federal structure, respect for regional aspirations, culture, language, food habits and the identity of indigenous people are under attack by the BJP in every state of the country. “This negative politics of ‘destruction, demolition and discretion’ are methodically vitiating the political atmosphere of the country. The BJP wants to exert its monolithic supremacy and bigoted agenda on each state, thus weakening the federal polity,” he alleged. Also Read – Personal life needs to be respected: Cong on reports of Rahul’s visit abroad Singhvi said “federal fascism is embedded in the BJP’s DNA and the power hungry Modi-Shah duo are hell-bent on bulldozing the cultural identity of states.” He said the Congress strongly condemns the violent discretion of the statue of national icon Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, a great educationist who changed the Bengali alphabet, sanskrit scholar and reformer who brought in the widow remarriage act and fought for women’s education. “We are deeply pained that such a shameful incident took place,” he said. Singhvi said Congress president Rahul Gandhi has taken upon himself to protect the culture, identity and language of the various states that make India. “This is one of the strongest reasons why Rahul Gandhi is fighting elections from both north India (Amethi) and south India (Wayanad) so that all parts of India feel united under the common umbrella of the Congress party,” he added. The Congress leader alleged that disrespect for national icons and hegemony of its own ideology was reflective of the BJP’s mindset and recalled how BJP H Raja had pledged to destroy the statue of social reformer Periyar in Chennai. BJP general secretary Ram Madhav “actively justified pulling down statues, but no action was taken against him”, he claimed. Singhvi alleged that a bust of national icon B R Ambedkar was found splashed with red paint in north Chennai and in February this year, members of a fringe right wing group associated with the Sangh Parivar “shamelessly” re-enacted the scene of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination by shooting his effigy with an air pistol after garlanding a picture of his assassin Nathuram Godse in Uttar Pradesh. He said the current situation was the result of “condemnable policies” of the Modi government for various states, including not granting special status to Andhra Pradesh, and “systematic mauling” of the federal structure as had happened during government formations in Goa, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur. “The Modi government’s politics of division was in full form, after it brought in the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), which was opposed tooth and nail in many states of the northeast. This was a direct assault on the indigenous people of the region,” Singhvi said. In Jammu and Kashmir too, he said this government promised Rs 80,000 crore, but gave only 31 per cent of the package and so was the case in Bihar, where a total of Rs 1.25 lakh crore was promised but nothing reached the state. “PM Modi, who paraded co-operative federalism as an ‘article of faith’, hasn’t even released the funds to states, with reports stating that the Centre has achieved only a third of devolution, thereby starving states of funds needed for vital welfare schemes like education and health,” he alleged.last_img read more

Former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett has enrolled in classes at the university for the second summer session, which began on Monday. “Maurice Clarett has been granted reentry into The Ohio State University, following a review by the College of Education and Human Ecology, where he was originally enrolled,” OSU director of media relations Jim Lynch said in a statement.Clarett was released from the Toledo Correctional Institution in April after serving on 3 ½ years of a 7 ½ year sentence for aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. In negotiation with his early release, Clarett was ordered to spend four to six months at a dormitory step-down center on Alum Creek Drive. I don’t want to be a distraction or nuisance to the football team or to students on campus.”Clarett might be back in the classroom, but he won’t be making an appearance on the field.
