Senators Shaheen, Hassan Announce Grants for Coastal Protection

first_imgImage source: USACESenators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan announced last week that The Nature Conservancy and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services will receive nearly $1.4 million in federal grants through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Resilience Grants Program. This money will be used to protect and strengthen New Hampshire and the region’s coastal communities.“The new grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Coastal Resilience Grants Program will help support important weather and safety infrastructure across the Seacoast,” said Senator Shaheen. “In my position as the lead Democrat on the subcommittee that oversees NOAA’s budget, I have made it a top priority to ensure NOAA has the resources it needs to help protect New Hampshire’s Seacoast from the impacts of climate change. These new grants from NOAA are key to our efforts to protect our environment and prepare our communities from natural disasters and rising sea levels.”“Our coastal communities are integral to our environment, our economy, and our way of life in New Hampshire, and we must do everything that we can to protect these regions from the very real environmental threats that are a result of climate change, including sea-level rise and flooding,” Senator Hassan said.“These grants from NOAA build on our conservation efforts to protect and preserve the natural resources that make the Granite State special, and I will continue fighting to combat climate change and protect our environment.”The Nature Conservancy received nearly $1 million in federal funding to implement and monitor a range of nature-based infrastructure projects to protect New Hampshire and the region’s coastal communities from flooding and to evaluate the effectiveness of such projects.last_img read more

Who Will Run On Red Bank’s GOP Ticket?

first_imgBy John BurtonRED BANK – The longstanding discord among Red Bank Republicans calls into question whether an incumbent will secure her party’s nomination for the borough council race for November.Democrats have announced their candidates, selecting incumbent councilmember Kathy Horgan to run for an additional three-year term and naming attorney and current Zoning Board of Adjustment member Erik Yngstrom as her running mate for the two available seats for the November ballot.“I’m really glad we’re organized early and we have two strong candidates,” said Edward Zipprich, municipal Democratic Committee chairman and borough councilman. On the Republican side, municipal committee chairman Sean Di Somma said this week the party wouldn’t decide on its slate of two candidates until later this month. Petitions have to be filed with the municipal clerk by April 4 at 4:30 p.m.But Di Somma’s further comments calls into question as to what the committee will do about nominating Republican incumbent Cindy Burnham, whose term is up this year.Di Somma said “I personally have not endorsed Cindy Burnham,” and has no plans to. Di Somma added that the three other incumbent Republican councilmembers have not offered their support for Burnham, either. The committee has the ability to name anyone, as long as the candidate meets the residency requirement and is a registered party member. “The local committee will decide who gets the party line,” Di Somma said. And the chairman said he believes anyone seeking the nomination “should have to come before the committee and say this is why I deserve your endorsement and this is why I deserve the party line (on the official ballot),” Di Somma said. But in the real world, the committee chair is likely to have considerable sway over the selection process. Having the party ballot line is an advantage for the candidate in securing the support of party faithful, especially in a presidential election year, which traditionally will draw out more voters.Burnham said this week, whatever the municipal party decides, she is empathic that, “I’m focused on working on Red Bank and getting re-elected.”“I’m going to seek the committee’s support and I’ll see where it goes from there,” she said, leaving the door open for a possible independent run to retain her seat on the six-member borough council. “Where it goes, who knows,” she offered.Di Somma and Burnham were running mates three years ago for council seats, with Burnham succeeding. Early on in that campaign, tension developed between the two, with both of them for all purposes campaigning independently. That tension has only become more pronounced both behind the scenes and increasingly publicly, especially as Burnham continues to operate as an independent firebrand, at times criticizing the actions of her fellow GOP councilmembers and others on the governing body.Burnham, long a self-described “citizen activist,” has a long history of sparring with the previous Democratic-controlled borough council, going back before being elected. When she won in 2013, she became the first Republican to take a council seat since 2007. “I definitely revived the Republican Party,” in the borough, she maintained, and said she is “disappointed” in what appears to be lack of support in the party for her candidacy. In the last two years, with Di Somma serving as committee chair, the local GOP won a total of three council seats, holding a 4-2 majority, the party’s first majority on the council in more than two decades.last_img read more

$2 million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile – Quotes and Recap – Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016

first_imgThe victory was the second World Championships triumph for Oxley, whose Beautiful Pleasure won the 1999 Distaff at Gulfstream Park. It was the third Breeders’ Cup win for Casse and seventh for Leparoux and first in the Juvenile for both. Winning Jockey Julien Leparoux (Classic Empire) – “He broke sharp and I put him in the race right away. He took second very nice. I tried to open up coming to the quarter pole, which he did and held off Not This Time (second). He is a nice colt. We really love him and we knew he was going to run good, so I’m glad we got the win.” Third-place jockey Joel Rosario (Practical Joke) – “I had a good trip. On the first turn I had to take hold just a little bit, not much.  Turning for home we went for it but the two in front were probably best today. In the last sixteenth they kind of got away from me.” Second-place jockey Robby Albarado (Not This Time, favorite) – “He was not all out today, but he galloped out well. He is an improving horse as this was just his fourth start. I look forward to the future. He’ll be a nice horse next year.” Second-place trainer Dale Romans (Not This Time, favorite) – “There’s no excuses. Perfect trip, the horse ran well, we just got beat by a real good horse in a fast time.” ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 5, 2016) – John Oxley’s Classic Empire ($11) disposed of Syndergaard at the head of the stretch and then held off a bid from favored Not This Time by a neck to win the 33rd running of the $2 million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) for 2-year-olds on Saturday afternoon at Santa Anita Park. Third-place trainer Chad Brown (Practical Joke) – “No excuses.  He had good position throughout.  Joel gave him a good trip.  He seemed to handle the track fine.  We were simply third best today.”center_img Fourth-place trainer Steve Asmussen (Lookin at Lee) – “He tried. I thought he ran well. Two horses we’ve chased the last two times finished 1-2, so he’s been keeping good company. Obviously, he looks like a horse where more distance will help him. We’ll evaluate how he’s doing and try to figure out how to get a good 3-year-old.” Trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Julien Leparoux, Classic Empire covered the mile and a sixteenth on a fast track in 1:42.60. A Kentucky-bred son of Pioneerof the Nile, Classic Empire has won four of five starts with the lone blemish coming in the Hopeful when he wheeled at the start of the race and lost his rider. CLASSIC EMPIRE HOLDS OFF NOT THIS TIME TO WIN SENTIENT JET BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE Winning Trainer Mark Casse (Classic Empire) – “I thought at the top of the lane he was going to win easily. Then it got pretty close, but Dale (Romans) said all along it was going to be us two and it was quite a deal. We got a little unlucky with Valadorna, but maybe we got lucky this time. We have a lot of wonderful people that we work for and we have a great team. I have been doing this 37 years and I thought his race in the Bashford Manor was as good as any 2yo I’ve ever trained. Then his deal he did in the Hopeful up at Saratoga, so this is maybe even a little more rewarding because it hasn’t been easy. He’ll try you.” SENTIENT JET BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE QUOTESlast_img read more

Region 1 hosts mini STEAMS Fair

first_imgThe Education Department of Region One (Barima-Waini) hosted a mini Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAMS) Fair and Exhibition on Saturday on the lawns of the Education Department in Mabaruma to officially begin activities in observance of Education Month 2018, celebrated under the theme “Education for a Good Life – Through Innovation and STEAMS”.Regional Chairman Brentnol AshleyIn delivering remarks at the event, Assistant Chief Education Officer-Primary (ACEO-P) Owen Pollard reminded the gathering of students, teachers and parents that without an effective education system a country cannot progress.Pollard said it is towards this end that the Education Ministry (MoE) will leave no stone unturned to educate the nation’s children in keeping with modern methodologies and concepts. With a focus on the theme, Pollard said it is imperative that an education system in the 21st century produces children who are able to function in the wider world. He is quoted by the Department of Public Information as saying that, “as a country we need scientists and other technically savvy citizens to guarantee Guyana taking its rightful place in the world”.Brentnol Ashley, Regional Chairman for Region One, said making education a priority irrespective of any prevailing circumstances is a mantra his region reverences highly. He said, “Children will have the opportunity to unravel the skills they have within,” Ashley quipped.Further, he noted that it is important to ensure that every child has an opportunity to maximise their potential and leaders should assist in ensuring such opportunities are provided. The Regional Chairman told the gathering that his region will be expending more monies for the continued development of education in Barima-Waini. “Education is everyone’s business, unless we take ownership of education and place emphasis on its importance much will not be achieved, for a society to be transformed education has to take its rightful place”.Meanwhile, District Education Officer (Region One), Marti DeSouza was in a celebratory mood because his region in keeping with the theme this year, established their first smart classroom. According to DeSouza, this technology will substitute for a teacher who might be absent since children from another school can be taught by another teacher from a separate school. The use of the smart classroom was demonstrated at the exhibition whereby students were given a Mathematics lesson on subtraction with regrouping. The schools participating were Mabaruma, Hosororo, Wauna, Aruka and Barbina Primary schools and North West Secondary.Following the opening of the Fair, the Welfare Department presented school supplies, inclusive of bags, footwear and exercise books to a number of students.last_img read more

He also has 25 postseason victories, including five Super Bowls.Defensively, the Patriots entered the night on pace to yield more than yards than any team in league history. And, Winston and a young Tampa Bay offense that’s progressively gotten better since he was selected first overall in the 2015 draft was hoping to be the latest beneficiary of New England’s struggles.Running back Doug Martin provided a lift in his return from a suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancers with 74 yards rushing and one TD.But one week after throwing for 332 yards and three touchdowns without an interception and overcoming a pair of fourth-quarter deficits to beat the Giants, Winston was unable to move the ball consistently until the fourth quarter.ADVERTISEMENT Neither of the mistakes led to points for Tampa Bay (2-2), which was unable to do much offensively until the fourth quarter.Brady threw a 5-yard TD pass to Chris Hogan in the second quarter, and Stephen Gostkowski kicked field goals of 27, 23, 45 and 48 yards for the Patriots (3-2).FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutJameis Winston rallied Tampa Bay late with an 18-yard TD pass to Cameron Brate that trimmed New England’s lead to 16-14 with 2:09 remaining.
