The foundation currently serves over 40 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, and provides educational tools in 21 languages.Children are eager to learnArboleda said their mission is to groom productive leaders of the 21st century. “These are the inventors and creators of our future, who are not waiting to be taught, but are eager to learn.”Mahanyele concurred: “Young people are looking for inspiration. They have an important role to play in being able to shape our future.”She added that someone needs to run the government of tomorrow and be able to make the tough decisions.“Children have wisdom, but often it is the language barrier that prevents them from being understood,” said Jack, adding that if they are educated in their own language, they can understand concepts faster and will be empowered. The empowerment of teachers was also discussed, as members of the audience felt that teachers should be given a lesson on dignity as well so that the message can be taught to children on a consistent basis.“Teachers are the enablers,” Arboleda said. “If we honour the teachers, they will empower our children. That is why we also provide teachers with laptops to help their pupils.”The discussion also led to the topic of entrepreneurship and how South Africa can go about encouraging it to combat unemployment. Lujabe said there will be modules on the laptops for children to get a head start on such topics that will inspire them at a young age and expand their goals.last_img read more

Google Reader Can Now Track Changes to Any Website – Even if it Can’t Find a Feed

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… frederic lardinois Google just announced an interesting update to Google Reader. Google’s online feed reader now allows you to track changes on any page – even those that don’t feature an RSS feed. Google will create its own custom feeds for these sites and update the feed whenever it notices a change. Google Reader will display a short snippet of the page changes in the RSS feed.Until today, Google Reader would simply respond with an error message if you tried to subscribe to a site that didn’t offer an RSS feed. Now, Google will simply create a new feed for the site and track updates. It’s not clear how often Google plans to ping these sites, however. Thanks to this, you can easily track the latest discounts on Macys.com or updates to Zillow.com’s homepage. As far as we were able to see, Google Reader creates very clean RSS feeds for these items. While Google doesn’t make it obvious, you can find the newly created feed by clicking “show details” in Google Reader. Thanks to this, you can subscribe to this new feed in any feed reader and not just in Google Reader. There are, of course, a number of other sites that also allow you to track when something changes on a site. ChangeDetection.com, for example, is a popular online service that will alert you whenever a page changes. Unlike Google Reader’s new feature, ChangeDetection.com also gives you a very detailed overview of of what exactly changed and what the page looked like before. The service also offers an RSS feed of these changes. Gearing Up for a Passive House Residence at Unity College

first_imgWe’ve seen plenty of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members get deep into design, construction, and logistics as they prepare 800-sq.-ft. homes for competition in the Solar Decathlon. But there are other academic forums for training your brain on energy efficiency and getting your hands dirty on a construction site, not the least being the “cottage style” student residence being designed for Unity College, in Unity, Maine.Last month, the college announced that the project got a significant push thanks to a $389,000 grant from the Kendeda Fund, a Delaware-based charitable program dedicated to exploring how to use natural resources sustainably. Early this week the school, whose curriculum covers a wide range of environmental disciplines, added that a designer and builder had been selected for the project: G•O Logic Homes, based in nearby Belfast, Maine. For students at Unity, this project could be one of the most instructive lab exercises imaginable, since many of them will participate in the design and construction of the building on the campus. Another key aspect of the project is that it is being designed to perform to the Passivhaus standard. Should the completed building earn certification from Passive House Institute U.S., school administrators say, it would be the first residence hall of its kind on a college or university campus in the U.S.There also will be a permanent public educational component for the hall, Robert Constantine, vice president for college advancement at the school, told the Republican Journal.High-performance credibilityRight now the project is in its preliminary stages of design, so the square footage, level and type of shell insulation, renewable-energy features, projected costs, renderings, and other details are not yet available. Buildings of this type are not brand new to Unity College, however: Unity House, a 1,937-square-foot LEED Platinum modular home on the campus, was built by Bensonwood Homes of Walpole, N.H. in the summer of 2008 and serves as the residence for the school’s president. In addition, G•O Logic’s portfolio features a number of energy-efficient residential structures, including BrightBuilt Barn, a studio-size prototype built largely off-site that was developed in collaboration with Kaplan Thompson Architects, Bensonwood Woodworking Company, and a number of engineers. Another G•O Logic project is Belfast Cohousing & Ecovillage, in Belfast, Maine, a 36-home development (including a 1,500-sq.-ft. prototype whose design and construction incorporate Passivhaus principles), that is being built on three acres of the community’s 30-acre site. So the planned residence at Unity will fit in nicely with the energy efficiency inclinations of both the builder and the school.“Not only is the Passivhaus standard at the very leading edge of the ‘what’s next’ for college and university campus construction,” G•O Logic architect Matthew O’Malia told the Republican Journal, “but this project is taking the concept one step further by involving students in all aspects of the project.”last_img read more

(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)With just a few weeks remaining until the College Football Playoff field is decided, the Big 12 is still up in the air. Oklahoma is the favorite to win the conference and make the four team field, but there are still scenarios in which Baylor and Oklahoma State can capture the conference crown. Three games—Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Baylor-TCU, and Baylor-Texas—will decide the conference champion. ESPN’s Max Olson tweeted out a handy, simple chart explaining all of the possible scenarios. So who wins the Big 12? Here’s the updated and much simpler chart. pic.twitter.com/o4TdzjPICH— Max Olson (@max_olson) November 22, 2015After last year’s debacle with Baylor and TCU, the Big 12 made head-to-head result the first tiebreaker to name a conference champion, so if Oklahoma wins Bedlam, it will take home the crown due to its win over Baylor. If Oklahoma State wins Bedlam, it need either TCU or Texas to knock off the Bears. Otherwise, Baylor will win the league. We’re pretty excited to see it all play out.last_img read more

First lady vows to fight cyberbullying despite skeptics

first_imgWASHINGTON – Pushing back against her critics, Melania Trump said Tuesday she’s committed to fighting cyberbullying despite the knocks she’s gotten for taking on the issue when her husband regularly uses Twitter to berate his foes and call them names.“I am well aware that people are skeptical of me discussing this topic,” the first lady said. “I have been criticized for my commitment to tackling this issue, and I know that will continue. But it will not stop me from doing what I know is right. I am here with one goal: helping children and our next generation.”Mrs. Trump made her comments as she convened executives from major online and social media companies at the White House to discuss cyberbullying and internet safety. The meeting came more than a year after she announced that cyberbullying would be her cause if Trump were elected president. The choice was immediately assailed, but Mrs. Trump said she won’t back down. She said she gets many letters from children who have been bullied or feel threatened on social media. She acknowledged that the issue has been studied for years, and told the executives she wants to hear “what you have learned, what has been accomplished, and what progress still needs to be made.”“I believe together we can make a real difference in encouraging positive behaviours on social media,” she added.Amazon, Snap, Facebook, Google, Twitter and Microsoft sent representatives, as did the Internet Association and the Family Online Safety Institute. All the major technology companies have strict policies prohibiting harassment and other bullying behaviour on their services, but primarily rely on users to report abuses and weed them out. They try to clearly spell out the kinds of remarks and other posts that won’t be tolerated in special sections such as one Facebook, the largest online social network, has set up. Instagram, a popular service among kids and young adults for sharing photos and videos, provides links to the U.S. government’s anti-bullying site and tips from a cyberbullying research centre on one of its help pages. But the efforts so far have fallen short, leading to rampant abuses that even some of the companies acknowledge have driven away or tormented portions of their audience. It got so bad on Twitter, which has 68 million U.S. users, that the San Francisco company vowed last fall to crack down on hateful tweets. Among other things, Twitter adopted new policies aimed at protecting women who unknowingly or unwillingly had nude pictures of themselves distributed online — a common bullying tactic.Yik Yak, another messaging app once popular among high school and college students, shut down last year partly because schools banned it following complaints about bullying and harassment.Online bullying takes many shapes, but some of the most common tactics include posting embarrassing or salacious photos, making demeaning or cruel remarks under a photo or in a general post about someone, and sharing screenshots of what at least one person thought was a private text.Harassment is widespread and extends beyond teenagers. A Pew Research Center poll last year found 41 per cent of U.S. adults believed they had been harassed online. The popularity and volume of content on major social media sites presents a huge challenge in policing what is being shared. Facebook, for instance, has 2.1 billion worldwide users who collectively share billions of posts on their pages daily. More than 300 hours of video is uploaded to Google’s YouTube site every minute. The companies are also constantly struggling to balance the desire to prevent harassment and other abuses with a commitment to freedom of expression. In some cases, they see harassment and still look the other way. For instance, some of President Trump’s more vitriolic tweets have openly mocked and denigrated people, prompting calls for Twitter to shut down his account and ban him from its service. But Twitter has declined, maintaining the news value of the president’s tweets eclipses complaints about him being a bully. There is no federal law that applies to bullying. State laws vary, ranging from requiring public schools to have bullying policies to requiring anonymous reporting systems, said Sameer Hinduja, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center and professor of criminology at Florida Atlantic University. The federal government can best help by giving schools more tools and money to provide programs, Hinduja said.Mrs. Trump announced in a speech near the end of the 2016 presidential campaign that her priority as first lady would be to fight cyberbullying.___AP Business Writer Michael Liedtke in San Francisco contributed to this report.___Follow Darlene Superville on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/dsupervilleaplast_img read more
