Sequoyah Simermeyer explained that the bulletin was designed to clarify the legality of sportsbooks on tribal lands, following numerous queries from operators.Since the repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in May 2018, Simermeyer noted, tribes in Mississippi, New Mexico and New York had joined a Nevada-based tribal operator in rolling out wagering. This is permitted, as sports betting is considered a form of Class III gaming, which can be rolled out by tribes that have a state compact approved by the US Department of the Interior. The bulletin advises tribes to check whether Class III gaming is covered by their existing compacts, or if it should be amended to include sports betting. There are currently four options or models for tribes to consider when preparing to launch wagering, it continued. These range from complete control – when tribes manage all aspects of a sportsbook – to a sportsbook wholly owned and operated by a third party, but hosted on tribal lands. In between, there is the option of having a sportsbook operated by a tribe, but using third-party data, or a tribal-owned sportsbook managed by a third party.Read the full story on iGB North America. Casino drives Kindred to revenue growth in first half

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Email Address Tags: Online Gambling Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Kindred Group has reported a year-on-year rise in revenue during the first half of the year, despite its business being impacted by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.Gross winnings revenue for the six months through to 30 June totalled £484.8m (€531.9m/$617.7m), an increase of 7.6% from £450.6m in the same period last year.Kindred, which earlier this month forecast revenue growth for the period, said that this rise was down positive performances across a number of markets, as well as its ongoing focus on product differentiation.Gross winnings revenue on sports betting amounted to £190.0m in the first half, down 11.8% from £215.4m in the first six months of 2019, with Kindred putting this down to the cancellation or postponement of many major sports events due to Covid-19.However, Kindred said this area of the business began to improve towards the end of the period, following the return of certain sports, including a number of major European football leagues and horse racing in various markets.Gross winnings revenue from other products – including casino, poker and bingo – came in at £294.8m, up 25.3% from £235.2m last year. Casino revenue totalled £263.3m, while poker revenue hit £17.2m and bingo £14.3m.Kindred noted that the reduced sports betting market during H1 saw more of its players switch to other products, which in turn led to the overall rise in revenue.Looking at geographical performance, Western Europe remained Kindred’s most active market by some margin, with revenue amounting to £293.8m, up 6.7% from £275.3m.Nordics revenue in the first half came in at £126.9m, while revenue from Central, Eastern and Southern Europe amounted to £43.1m. Revenue from other markets totalled £21.0m during the six-month period.Kindred added that it expects revenue in its ‘other market’ sector to increase in the second half, given that it is due to launch in Indiana – its third US state – via a partnership with Caesars Entertainment at the end of this month. After this, the operator is seeking to launch in at least two more states in 2021.“Our US business continues to develop very strongly, despite the loss of offline revenues and the disruption to sports,” Kindred chief executive Henrik Tjärnström said.“After less than a year of operations, the US already accounted for more than 2.5% of the group’s gross winnings revenue and this share is expected to accelerate in coming quarters, especially as further states go live.”In terms of spending for the period, cost of sales amounted to £204.2m, up 1.6% from £201.0m last year. Betting duties spend was slightly down to £98.1m, while marketing revenue share was relatively level at £25.3m and other costs edged up to £80.8.Operating costs in H1 were up slightly to £212.2m, with salaries costs jumping 20.3% to £56.2m, despite Kindred reducing its workforce in the period in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Marketing costs were cut from £106.8m to £96.6m. Other operating costs fell slightly to £33.6m in H1.Despite costs edging up in the first half, revenue growth meant that Kindred was able to end the period with $68.4m in underlying profit, compared to £38.1m at the same point last year. After taking into account other spending, including £10.8m worth of accelerated amortisation of acquired intangible assets and £8.6m in foreign currency loss, the operator posted £33.7m in profit before, up 4.0% on last year.Kindred paid £5.9m in income tax during the first half, which meant it ended the six-month period with £27.8m in profit after tax, slightly up from £27.6m in 2019.In addition, Kindred noted that the actions it took to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 on the business led to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of £94.2m, up 51.9% from last year. The interim report also included details of Kindred’s performance in the second quarter, during which some major sports events returned and thus boosted the operator’s sports betting arm.Revenue for the three-month period totalled £235.1m, up 4.0% on the previous year, while profit after tax rocketed 114.4% to £26.8m. Underlying EBITDA was also up 67.3% to £51.7m in the quarter.“Our teams around the world have worked incredibly well in the new environment, both in dealing with the challenges from the pandemic and in driving efficiency as our cost reduction programme continues,” Tjärnström said.“Kindred remains conscious of the risk of further disruption both to sports and the wider economy, so we will continue to manage the overall cost base carefully.”The operator also offered an insight into its current performance, saying that in the period to 19 July, sportsbook margins were 20% higher than average, while gross winnings revenue was 40% above average. In the US, average daily gross winnings revenue for the period increased by 32% compared to the daily average for the second quarter 2020.Analysts at Regulus Partners also offered their view on the first half performance, saying that the results show Kindred “demonstrated the value of geographic and product diversity”. However, Regulus also warned that Kindred could face challenges following the return of sports.Regulus said: “During the acute period of Covid-19 disruption it has helped enormously to have a high gaming mix. However, as mainstream sports and mass market engagement returns, increasing sports-led global and local competition is likely to re-exert pressure on Kindred’s waterfront .com – regulated business model, in our view.” Casino & gamescenter_img Topics: Casino & games Finance Sports betting Kindred Group has reported a year-on-year rise in revenue during the first half of the year, despite its business being impacted by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. 24th July 2020 | By contenteditor Casino drives Kindred to revenue growth in first halflast_img read more

Inspired sees losses widen in H1 despite revenue growth

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Tags: Online Gambling OTB and Betting Shops Inspired sees losses widen in H1 despite revenue growth Inspired Entertainment has reported an increased net loss for the first half of the year, despite reporting year-on-year revenue growth for the period.Revenue for the six months to 30 June amounted to $67.9m (£51.8m/€57.3m), up 12.4% from $60.4m in the corresponding period last year.Inspired noted growth across its two primary business segments, with service revenue climbing 3.6% to $58.4m and hardware revenue rocketing 137.5% to $9.5m.In terms of spending in the first half, cost of services was down from $10.7m to $9.7m, but cost of hardware was up 180.8% to $7.3m.Selling, general and administrative expenses jumped 44.4% to $39.7m, but stock-based compensation costs more than halved from $4.4m to $2.0m. Acquisition and integration related transaction expenses were up 175.0% to $4.4m, while depreciation and amortisation spend jumped 37.8%.Higher spending in certain areas offset the increase in revenue, leaving Inspired with an operating loss of $21.1m, compared to $5.2m last year. Other spending, mainly $14.2m in interest expenses and $6.2m in other finance related costs, amounted to $20.5m in additional outgoings. Though Inspired only paid $300,000 in tax during H1, it ended the period with a net loss of $41.9m, a  $15.7m last year.Lorne Weil, executive chairman of Inspired, praised the provider’s performance in the first half, saying that it weathered a number of challenges due to novel coronavirus (Covid-19), which primarily impacted the business in the second quarter.“We believe we are well-positioned to recover, assuming no further Covid-19 measures are implemented in our markets, given our focus on local, smaller retail venues,” Weil said.“We believe there are less travel dependent and better situated than larger venues to adapt to social distancing measures, and our European-concentrated business which appears to be better positioned than the United States in managing the Covid-19 health crisis.”Looking more closely at the second quarter, when many of Inspired’s clients were forced to temporarily close their retail venues due to the pandemic, revenue was down 41.6% to $15.6m.Service revenue slipped 40.6% to $15.2m, after its retail clients were hit hard by temporary shop closures amid the pandemic. Breaking this down further, server-based gaming (SBG) revenue fell 77.1% to $4.0m, with SBG service revenue also fell 78.1% to $3.6m and SBG hardware revenue down from $1.1m to $400,000.Virtual sports revenue, which includes interactive, was up by 6.4% to $9.8m, despite the shutdown of retail services in key markets the UK, Greece and Italy. However, Covid-19 stay-at-home orders and growing migration to igaming saw revenue from online virtuals rise to $2.9m and interactive games’ contirbution increased to $1.3m.Acquired business service revenue – from the Gaming Technology Group business purchased from Novomatic in June last year – was $1.8m. Of this total, approximately $1.2m was generated from the online business, with pubs, leisure parks, motorway service areas and adult gaming centres closed for all of the quarter. With business slowing in Q2, this led to a drop in certain expenses, with cost of sales falling from $5.4m to $3.1m, and hardware expenses down from $1.0m to $300,000.Selling, general and administrative expenses were 17.2% lower at $10.6m, while stock-based compensation costs fell from $2.3m to $1.0m. However, acquisition and integration related transaction expenses were up 71.4%% to $1.2m, and depreciation and amortisation spend hiked 46.2% to $13.3m.This transpired to an operating loss of $13.9m for the second quarter, compared to a $4.5m loss last year. Other expenses totalled $10.5m, which meant that the provider posted a $24.4m loss before tax, higher than the $10.6m in 2019.After paying $100,000 in tax, Inspired ended the second quarter with a net loss of $24.5m, compared to a $10.7m loss in the same period last year.“We are pleased with the fundamentals of our business as we have navigated the impact of the Covid-19 closures,” Weil said. “Given these closures, we expected a negative impact in the second quarter.“However the implementation of aggressive cost-savings measures and strong demand in our online business, which more than doubled on a pro forma basis, helped to compensate for the retail closures and we were able to achieve EBITDA profitability during the quarter.”Weil added: “As we look ahead, we remain confident in the long-term fundamentals of our business. Between the return of our land-based business and the continued growth in our online business, we are upbeat on the outlook for the third quarter and beyond.” 13th August 2020 | By contenteditor Subscribe to the iGaming newslettercenter_img Email Address Inspired Entertainment has reported an increased net loss for the first half of the year, despite reporting year-on-year revenue growth for the period. EGBA sets out the case for end to Finnish gambling monopoly

first_imgThese sites, he said, offer better returns, higher winnings and a wider selection of products.  “This means that more choice or alternatives to Veikkaus can easily found on the internet with international betting websites,” he said. “A recent survey showed that last year 16.4% of Finland’s online gambling revenue, equivalent to €105m in taxable revenue, was spent by Finns on international betting websites which pay their taxes elsewhere.” The furloughs – which will not result in redundancy – will last for a maximum of 90 days, with staff to also be put on paid leave to avoid permanent layoffs. They will be in effect while retail gaming venues are temporarily shuttered as a result of the country’s novel coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions.  17th December 2020 | By Robin Harrison Topics: Legal & compliance Regulation Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter “All other EU countries have already done this, it makes sense, and it’s time for Finland to do the same.” EGBA sets out the case for end to Finnish gambling monopoly This, Haijer said in conclusion, presented a clear choice to the Finnish government.  Tags: Veikkaus European Gaming and Betting Association The association pointed out Finland was the only European Union member state that still maintained a gambling monopoly, something that had allowed Veikkaus to grow into one of the biggest operators on the continent, with annual revenue of €1.6bn. Furthermore, EGBA continued, other Nordic nations had benefitted from ending their gambling monopolies. Denmark saw offshore gambling fall from 28% of stakes when the market was regulated in 2012 to just 8% in 2019. Sweden, meanwhile, reduced the size of its offshore market from 56% in 2016 to 15% in 2020, the second year of regulation.  “The current goal is to restore the business and open Veikkaus’ own gaming venues and decentralised slot machines when the situation in the hospital district allows it,” the operator’s director of channels and sales Jari Heino explained. “In line with this goal, the layoffs in the area would end at the same time.” Regulation Haijer said its slot network was so large that for every one ATM in the country, there were ten slot machines, something Veikkaus is looking to address by taking 8,000 machines out of service by the end of the year.  “Replacing the monopoly with an open-licensing system is not about getting more people in Finland to gamble, nor is it about killing off Veikkaus,” he said. “Rather, it is the sensible way to meet the demands of those Finnish gamblers who seek an alternative to the monopoly and currently gamble on international gambling websites – and to regulate and tax this activity. Email Address Regions: Nordics Finland “Introducing open-licensing for online gambling is not revolutionary, it is evolutionary, and will ensure that most Finns gamble in a regulated and protected environment. But adapted to the realities of our times. “There is no compelling evidence that Finns are in any way better protected that their European counterparts because of the country’s online gambling monopoly – it’s a myth,” Haijer said.  The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has ended 2020 with a call to the Finnish government to ‘fix’ its gambling policy, by bringing an end to Veikkaus’ monopoly in the country. Veikkaus’ own survey, conducted between February and April, suggested a lower rate – though not by much – at 2.3%.  AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter The business can only offer land-based gaming in the hospital districts of Kainuu, Lapland, Eastern Savo and North Savo, where Covid-19 cases are in decline. It was forced to begin shutting its retail premises from late November amid a surge in the country’s infection rate.  However, this is accompanied by public opinion shifting in favour of an end to the monopoly, as evidenced by a widely circulated 2019 survey from affiliate Kasino Curt.  There was little evidence of Finnish citizens being protected from gambling related harm under the monopoly framework, Haijer continued. The country’s Institute for Health and Welfare estimated the country’s problem gambling rate to be around 3%, putting it ten times higher than Spain’s 0.3% prevalence despite that country being much larger, and without any online monopoly. “Yet these days you are more likely to hear criticisms of Veikkaus and its prevalence across Finnish society,” EGBA secretary general Maarten Haijer said.  This growing demand for alternative forms of gambling, Haijer explained, was largely down to the fact it is simply impossible to enforce a monopoly system online.  In related news, Veikkaus has completed negotiations with employee representatives over furloughing as many as 800 staff from across its retail network. The furloughs will come into effect from early January, with those who cannot be redeployed from the operator’s casinos and gaming halls into other parts of the business. last_img read more
