Southland’s John Williams Named to NCAA Division I Council

first_imgFRISCO, Texas – Southland Conference Deputy Commissioner John Williams has been selected as the league’s new representative to the NCAA Division I Council. Williams, a former collegiate basketball student-athlete and coach, NCAA administrator, and campus athletic director, is completing his second year on the Southland staff. He will begin his four-year term on July 1.  Before joining the Southland staff in 2017, Williams most recently served as the athletics director at Southland member, the University of the Incarnate Word.  Williams began his coaching and administrative experience as an assistant men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, Ball State University, in 1982. He later became head men’s basketball coach at Earlham College (Ind.), served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and held the dual role of athletics director and head basketball coach at the University of Saint Francis (Ind.). Following a stint as head coach at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Williams began a 12-year stay at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis, first as a professional development coordinator followed by a lengthy run as director of championships and alliances. He served as a member of the NCAA’s championship executive team and served as a hiring coordinator for the championship group for 10 years. Williams managed 35 national championships in Division I, II and III, overseeing selection processes, budgets, event operations, community outreach programs, and branding initiatives at championship locations. Additionally, he was charged with the NCAA’s diversity and inclusion, professional development, postgraduate and internship programs. In his current role, Williams leads the Southland’s efforts in NCAA governance and affairs, provides executive oversight of the league’s compliance and academic services, and serves as the primary staff liaison to the Advisory Council, the Southland’s operating body of faculty representatives, athletic directors and senior woman administrators.  He is also actively involved with the Conference’s governing presidential body, the Board of Directors, provides direction and assistance with the league’s strategic plan, and oversees the Southland’s men’s and women’s basketball operations, focusing on competitive and academic success strategies for these sports. “The Southland is proud to announce the appointment of John Williams to the NCAA Division I Council and Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee,” said league Commissioner Tom Burnett. “In addition to his career-long administrative accomplishments, his involvement with college basketball as a student-athlete, coach and NCAA Championships administrator will be beneficial to the Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee and to our Southland membership.” The Division I Council is a high-level administrative group responsible for the day-to-day decision-making for Division I. Athletics directors, conference commissioners, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and student-athletes serve on the Council. Every Division I conference is represented on the Council, and Williams is replacing Sam Houston State Associate Athletic Director Chris Thompson, who is completing a full term as the Southland’s representative.  As part of his Council position, Williams will also serve a four-year term on the Division I Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee, a group that ensures that appropriate oversight of men’s basketball is maintained, enhances the development and public perception of the sport and make recommendations related to regular-season and postseason men’s basketball. The Oversight Committee supervises qualifications and/or selection procedures for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. The committee also reviews recommendations from the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and processes other issues related to the administration of the championship. The committee also provides direction to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Rules Committee regarding playing rules. Having earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Ball State, Williams also was a three-time team captain with the men’s basketball team while garnering three honorable mentions for the Mid-American Conference all-league teams. He was a key part of MAC championship teams in 1980-81 and 1981-82, and his 39-point scoring output against Central Michigan as a junior still stands among the top individual performances at Ball State.last_img read more

first_imgJOCKEY QUOTESTIAGO PEREIRA, FASHIONABLY FAST, WINNER: “Our plan was to stay just behind the one horse (Baja Sur) and then push on the outside when we came for home. I switched the whip in the stretch and when the horse came outside of us, he really responded. I worked this horse the other day and he worked very fast.  I love this horse (Fashionably Fast has won five in a row).”TRAINER QUOTESDEAN PEDERSON, FASHIONABLY FAST, WINNER: “It was great. I left it up to Tiago (Pereira). I told him not to concede enough to Baja Sur and keep the pressure on him. I don’t know if that is his ideal running style but you gotta ride to win. That was the game plan we had come up with. I kind of left it in his hands. The horse was just game as can be coming down the stretch.“The horse has done so much for us, how can you be disappointed in anything he does?  We are just very thankful to be in this position and for the opportunity to have this horse. You can’t train for better owners.”JOHN HARRIS, COALINGA, CA, OWNER/BREEDER FASHIONABLY FAST, WINNER: “At about the eighth pole, I thought maybe we were in deep water, but he kept going. We always want to win, but it’s particularly fun to win with a homebred. And it’s fun to win this race which was named for my good friend Don Valpredo. To be here today, with people like this, is special.”NOTES: The winning owners are Harris Farms, Inc., Per Antonsen and John Nicoletti.last_img read more

Fumiaki Tanaka-Joe Wheeler enjoy some banter in middle of Super Rugby game

first_imgPhoto By: Robyn Edie (Sunwolves halfback Fumiaki Tanaka ready to feed the ball into a scrum as Highlanders player Aaron Smith, on right, and referee Jamie Nutbrown, left, look on). Not because the now Sunwolves halfback misses his former Highlanders team mates, but because someone pointed him towards the tribute song Highlanders lock Joe Wheeler did for him before the game.Wheeler penned a song to the music of Adelle’s hit song Hello as a comical tribute to Tanaka.”Before the game I laughed so much. I was about to cry, I was almost in tears,” Tanaka said after the 40-15 loss to the Highlanders.”I was so excited to play against them and so fortunate to play against them. Somehow I was hoping to put pressure on the Highlanders. I was able to put some pressure to Nuggy [Aaron Smith], [but] I got so much pressure off him and also Joe Wheeler.”Despite being in the middle of a Super Rugby fixture on Saturday night the friendship prompted some laughs during the game in Invercargill.”In the ruck [Wheeler] was grabbing me, I was trying to get him off and he was just laughing at me.”Tanaka made a big impact during his four years playing in Dunedin, both with his ability to clear the ball quickly as a halfback and also in terms of his popularity within the team off the field. When asked after the game if he missed Dunedin, the answer was prompt.”Yes,” he said.”I miss my Highlanders team mates and coaches.”Tanaka was part of the Highlanders team which sky-rocketed up the Super Rugby ladder and in 2015 won the title. His switch to the Sunwolves has seen him join a team which is trying to just be competitive in Super Rugby.”At the moment we are still trying to establish the team so it’s a different excitement from the Highlanders.”last_img read more

Rennie has confidence in All Blacks

first_imgPhoto: PHOTOSPORT Lions and Chiefs players get to know each other 2017. The Lions overcame successive midweek losses to the Blues and Highlanders to control the game, force the Chiefs into errors and shut down their attack before they ran out 34-6 winners in Hamilton.”They dominated up front. We battled to get our lineout going. Our scrum. And they punished us for it,” Rennie said.”(But) the All Blacks will play the way they play, they will back themselves and their skill set to challenge the Lions. The Lions failed to impress in New Zealand as they struggled in three of their first four games but they have been brutally clinical in their last two matches if somewhat restricted and one-dimensional.They did show some creative penetration against the Chiefs, with Liam Williams pushing his case for the first test with some incisive breaks. The visitors, however, again failed to put away several other chances with one pass from Scotland winger Tommy Seymour to Jared Payne so poor that the New Zealand-born Ireland centre was unable to haul it in with the line open.Commentators point to the way the All Blacks tore apart Samoa last Friday to run in 12 tries as an indication of what could be the big difference between the sides at Eden Park.Lions coach Warren Gatland, however, said his team were still ironing out their combinations and although he was happy with the defensive side of their game, knows the All Blacks would present a massive step up.”It takes a bit of time,” he said. “We knew we were creating tries we just haven’t been finishing them off.”From a defensive point of view we’re getting stronger and stronger in that area against the best attacking teams in world rugby. We’re strangling them a little bit in the way that we’re defending too.”On Saturday we’re up against the best team in the world in their own backyard, a place they haven’t been beaten at since 1994, so we have to take things up a level.”last_img read more
