Men’s basketball receives six commitments in March

first_imgThe Trojans’ 2018 and 2019 recruiting classes ranked 18th and 7th respectively in the nation per 247Sports. The 2020 class is not repeating as a top-20 national finish thus far as USC currently sits in 50th place, but the incoming class is far from a disappointment. The cancellations of the Pac-12 and NCAA tournaments cut USC’s opportunities to prove itself short this season, but the USC coaching staff and athletic director Mike Bohn are looking forward to the bright future USC basketball seems to have in store as the Trojans attract top recruits from across the country. Despite having its Pac-12 Tournament and March Madness hopes cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, the USC men’s basketball team has maintained its strong presence on the recruiting trail for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Although it is early, USC now has the No. 1 recruiting class for 2021. Dixon-Waters and Thomas will join Mater Dei center Harrison Hornery in the class. The Trojans landed two top-eight California recruits — four-star shooting guards Reese Dixon-Waters of St. Bernard and Malik Thomas of Damien, who committed to USC last week.  USC will be keeping a close eye on Moussa Cisse, Kennedy Chandler and Zaon Collins in hopes to add onto their already-impressive 2021 class. Headlining the 2020 class is five-star center Evan Mobley from Rancho Christian in Temecula. Mobley is listed as the No. 2 player in the country behind Oklahoma State commit Cade Cunningham. The two, along with Emoni Bates of Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti, Mich., were named finalists for the 2019-20 Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award.center_img Dixon-Waters announced his commitment to USC in a video posted to his social media accounts last Tuesday, and Thomas announced his commitment online via the Compton Magic’s Twitter account three days later. In addition, Wofford junior forward Chevez Goodwin, Santa Clara junior guard Tahj Eaddy and Utah Valley junior guard Isaiah White announced their transfers to USC last week, joining three-star center Boubacar Coulibaly of San Gabriel Academy on the long list of March additions to the Trojans’ 2020 roster. “Academically [USC] has what I want to major in,” Goodwin said per 247Sports. “That was big. Then coach [Andy] Enfield has a plan for me. He wants me to play for him and knows exactly how I play and how he wants to get me better. It was all genuine.” “As a kid, USC was my dream school,” Dixon-Waters said per 247Sports. “I always wanted to go there. It’s closer to home so my family can be at every home game, and I love the school coaches.” USC is still awaiting decisions from Jalen Green, Ziaire Williams, Greg Brown, Joshua Christopher and Makur Maker, all of whom are top-12 recruits nationally in the Class of 2020. Williams — the No. 5 player in the nation — will likely be at the top of USC’s list, as the Sierra Canyon shooting guard has USC in his top six along with Arizona, Stanford, North Carolina, UCLA and Oregon.last_img read more

England’s unique training method for World Cup 2019 semis: Use rubber chicken

first_imgEngland have found a unique way to train ahead of their semi-final clash against Croatia in Moscow at the World Cup 2018 on Wednesday. The Three Lions used rubber chicken during their training session on Tuesday as they look to reach the final of a World Cup for the second time in their rich sporting history. England had won the football World Cup in 1966.England and Croatia, who have been waiting years to put right the bitter memories of World Cup semi-final defeats, will face each other on Wednesday in Moscow with the chance to finally go one step further.England’s last appearance at this stage was in 1990 when they lost in a penalty shootout to West Germany in Turin while eight years later, in their first World Cup as an independent nation, Croatia lost to hosts and eventual winners France. When you bring a rubber chicken to training… @England // #WorldCup World Cup (@FIFAWorldCup) July 10, 2018While many outsiders view that unexpected Croatian run to the last four as a great success, inside the country many share the view of the team’s then manager Miroslav Blazevic that it was a missed opportunity. Why English fans hearing ‘Football’s Coming Home’ relieves Gareth SouthgateEngland too left Italy 28 years ago feeling that the team featuring Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne could have gone all the way.But neither side are in a mood for nostalgia or using the past as motivation.2018 FIFA WORLD CUP: FULL COVERAGEWhile Croatian players, who have been asked constantly about the generation of 1998 and never fail to express their admiration for the likes of Zvonimir Boban and Davor Suker, those comparisons are a weight they feel is unneeded.advertisementWell, that’s one way to warm up for a training session… #threelions (@England) July 10, 2018England’s loss in 1990 was turned into a documentary film and has become a fabled part of the country’s “52 years of pain” since their 1966 World Cup triumph.UNDERESTIMATEDNeither team came to Russia being heralded as favourites but they have produced performances throughout the competition which have shown they were underestimated by the pundits.World Cup 2018: Eric Dier insists England haven’t succeeded yetCroatia’s 3-0 win over Argentina in the group stage was a clear signal that the team led by midfield maestro Luka Modric was a real threat with their clever passing and movement. In their quarter-final clash with Russia, the Croats showed a different side, being willing to slug it out with the Russians for 120 minutes before keeping their cool and winning the shootout in such a partisan atmosphere.World Cup 2018: Alli critical of his performance ahead of Croatia clashEngland, who made an early impression with a 6-1 crushing of Panama in the group stage, then overcame their shootout hoodoo in beating Colombia in the last 16 and looked composed and mature in the 2-0 quarter-final victory over Sweden.Given Croatia had extra time and penalties to recover from, England should come into the game fresher and they also have the edge in previous meetings, winning four of the seven encounters, including a 5-1 victory in their most recent match — a World Cup qualifier in 2009.(With inputs from Reuters)last_img read more
