FNB pours R40m into local football

first_img14 December 2010First National Bank, one of South Africa’s four major banks, is to invest R40-million (US$5.8-million) in developing the country’s young footballers over the next few years. The bank will sponsor the national under-17 boys’ and girls’ teams, as well as school football tournaments. It has already built four pitches in as many communities, and another will be finished in 2011.FNB’s investment, announced on 9 December, is part of the bank’s legacy programme following the 2010 Fifa World Cup, into which it pumped R30-million ($4.3-million).“We’re happy to announce this, especially at a time when I can assure you that things are not easy in corporate South Africa,” said FNB brand director Derek Carstens. The government and the South African Football Association (Safa) praised the bank for its pledge. The biggest chunk of the sponsorship will go to the under 17-boys’ and girls’ teams, respectively known as Amajimbos and Abantwana. FNB has already channelled R18-million ($2.6-million) into these teams, which are eyeing spots in the next Fifa World Cups for their age groups.“The key objective we’ve set ourselves is that Amajimbos and Abantwana qualify for the World Cup in 2012 and 2013,” Carstens said.FNB has been involved with the Amajimbos for a number of years now, but the Abantwana sponsorship is a new venture. “We look at male and female sports as equally important,” he added.Bringing the Beautiful Game back to schoolsThe FNB Festivals are tipped to become the next biggest fad in school football. A total of 162 schools will participate in the inaugural event in 2011, after which it will become an annual fixture.Twenty schools will battle it out in the Lucas Radebe Tribute Festival, which is the Soweto leg of the competition in south-west Johannesburg. St Davids Marist in Sandton, Johannesburg will see 42 schools slugging it out for glory.Grey College in Bloemfontein will host 20 schools, while a further 32 schools will use Durban’s Kloof High School as their battlefield. Victoria Park and Benoni High, schools located in Port Elizabeth and east of Johannesburg respectively, will each host 16 school teams. The schools’ competition is viewed as a great way to get pupils back into the swing of the Beautiful Game. Local football experts agree that the sport has long lost its ground in both urban and rural schools, which has impacted negatively on talent development. This is blamed for the current under-performance of national squads.“Our football in schools, I must say, is dead,” said Serame Letsoaka, Safa’s technical director. “This is where we tapped in for talent.“Thank you FNB for creating this opportunity to go back to schools.”R15-million on turfsThe bank channelled about R15-million ($2.2-million) into the development of football pitches before the 2010 Fifa World Cup. The pitches were created in Thohoyandou in Limpopo, Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, Mthatha in the Eastern Cape and George in the Western Cape.A pitch in Kimberley, Northern Cape, will be completed by June in 2011, the bank said.Community leagues will play their matches here, and may also host touring international junior teams. “We’re looking at teams like Boca Juniors of Argentina to bring their under-17s to play at the turfs,” said Carstens.Carstens said they have partnered with local municipalities in the areas to maintain the grounds.Coaches will be groomed for all the venues. Letsoaka, a coach himself, is excited about coaching clinics that will be run at the pitches. “We have been saying, let’s produce developmental coaches. These are the areas where we’ll develop coaches,” he said.Lucas Radebe, the former Bafana and Leeds United captain, has been appointed the ambassador of FNB’s legacy programme and he’ll oversee activities on the pitches.Intensifying Soccer Classic ClashesThe bank’s Soccer Classic Clashes competition, which was launched in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, in 2007, will also be extended. Starting in 2011, there will be far more venues and matches than in previous years, according to FNB.Minister of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula said: “This legacy programme will impact on thousands of lives. A number of Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana (national male and female teams) will be drawn from this programme.”First published by MediaClubSouthAfrica.com – get free high-resolution photos and professional feature articles from Brand South Africa’s media service.last_img read more

Windows Embedded 8 Wants To Be In Your Car – And Lots Of Other Places, Too

first_imgTags:#embedded#Microsoft#Windows “An OEM [device manufacturer] can build the device they want,” Edson said. “They can use features as they want, with a full experience like a keyboard,” or choose to eliminate some of those additional features.  Certain Windows Embedded 8 versions, such as the Standard version, can “lock down” certain features. The idea is to prevent users from turning the kiosk into a PC that they can play with and possibly hack into. Windows 8 Embedded Standard can turn off certain gestures, for example, prevent the software keyboard from being enabled, or block the Windows 8 “charms” from being shown. On the other hand, using Windows 8 as a foundation should mean that familiar touchscreen gestures should also work on kiosks, making them more accessible to a generation who has grown up on iPads (and Surface tablets, Microsoft hopes). The Windows Embedded 8 operating systems support only the x86 chip architecture made by Intel and AMD. Windows 8 Compact supports the ARM processor architecture, making it a sort of Windows RT for the embedded space. That means that customers will have to develop their own apps, but that’s far less of a problem when they’re trying to present a particular experience – a dedicated mall kiosk is often designed to run a single application, not play Angry Birds.Handheld Devices – Not SmartphonesDon’t expect Windows Embedded 8 Handheld to compete with Windows Phone. The list of handheld devices running Windows Phone Embedded Handheld includes handheld scanners used to track packages for shipment and manage inventory. One intriguing question mark will be Windows Embedded 8 for Automotive, which the company hopes will power the next generation of cars. Microsoft isn’t saying which car makers are along for the ride, just that it’s working with a “group of preselected partners” to develop the technology.Windows Embedded has long been one of the geekier versions of Windows, hidden away behind counters and in back rooms to link business storefronts to industry management software and other back-room applications. But with Windows 8 designed to be a more cutting-edge, consumer-friendly operating system you might see it sneak into your local mall. Or your next car’s dashboard.Photo illustration of Ford Sync and Windows 8 by Fredric Paul. Cloud Hosting for WordPress: Why Everyone is Mo… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Serverless Backups: Viable Data Protection for … Related Posts markhachman Don’t think that you’ll be able to escape Windows 8 by going to the mall – or just about anywhere else. On Tuesday night, Microsoft invited the Windows 8 environment into the embedded world of cars, kiosks, handheld devices and just about everywhere else.Beginning in early 2013, Microsoft will make five versions of Windows Embedded 8 available to developers: Windows 8 Embedded Standard, plus “Pro,” “Industry,” “Handheld” and “Automotive” versions. Microsoft will also release Windows Embedded Compact 2013, designed for small-footprint devices that require flexible hardware, the use of touch- and gesture-based inputs and real-time support. Microsoft also made a preview release of Windows Embedded Standard available on its website, available today for developers. Windows Has A Long Embedded HistoryEmbedding versions of Windows in consumer products like a mall kiosk or a grocery store checkout isn’t new. What products use Windows? Somewhat embarassingly for Microsoft, a great way to find out is to do an image search for something like “blue screen kiosk,” which will pull up pictures of all sorts of products that have used Windows – and crashed. But Windows Embedded general manager Barb Edson also said that Windows powers Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Sea, the largest cruise ship in the world, where the systems help employees manage and prevent food spoilage. And a bit closer to home, the Cincinnati Reds use Windows Embedded to manage the team’s ticket sales. In all, IDC estimates the market for these “intelligent systems” will be $1.4 trillion by 2016.Part of the value of Windows Embedded 8, Edson explained, was selling an end-to-end solution; in other words, Microsoft’s enterprise sales teams go to customers and not only try to sell them the Windows Embedded 8 OS, but also a suite of services that extends into the enterprise: from front-end hardware to back-end analytical tools that can crunch the big data needed to power in-store retail kiosks. Microsoft already has a version of Windows Server and SQL Server optimized for these embedded devices.Buy Cat Litter Using Windows 8?For a consumer, however, the message is simple: If a retailer wishes it, you could be seeing the Live Tile-based Windows 8 “Metro” interface at stores and airports. “There’s an opportunity for the industry to attach devices to the entire infrastructure,” Edson said. “That means there’s a broad opportunity for PCs, phones, tablets and embedded devices combined.” Does that mean that you could be seeing Live Tiles while checking in at the airport? Yes, although you might not recognize them. Although the underlying software infrastructure of a kiosk may be powered by Windows 8 Embedded, a Target store might show you only four live tiles at a time, Edson said: possibly something like “bridal registry,” “today’s discounts” and others. And the retailer has no requirement or incentive to make those kiosks look like a PC. How Intelligent Data Addresses the Chasm in Cloudlast_img read more

‘Violence against Dalits continuing in Rajasthan’

first_imgThe violence against Dalits, which started during the Bharat Bandh on April 2, was still continuing in Rajasthan with the BJP government targeting the youths, tribals, students and government employees, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) alleged here on Monday. Amid the “repressive measures”, Dalits were living in a state of terror, it said. The CPI(M)’s fact-finding teams, which went to Khairthal – where a youth was killed in the police firing – and other areas of the State, found that while the police had humiliated and thrashed the activists of Dalit organisations, the office-bearers of BJP and RSS, accompanied by their workers, had indulged in “full-scale violence” and attacked the Dalit localities.‘BJP, Cong. connived’“Even the Congress leaders connived with the BJP members and participated in violence at some places,” CPI(M) State secretary and former MLA Amra Ram said at a press conference here. Mr. Ram said a large number of youths and government employees, who took leave on April 2 to participate in the bandh, were incarcerated in jails on bogus charges.Hundreds of people injured in the violence were being treated at hospitals or at their home, while the State government was not willing to give them any compensation, said Mr. Ram. “Students have been stopped from appearing in their examinations, while the police have sought lists of employees from offices in a bid to implicate them in false charges and deprive them of their livelihood.”Former Minister Bharosi Lal Jatav, whose house was set on fire in Hindaun, told a delegation of CPI(M) leaders that a Pradesh Congress Committee member and a local BJP leader had led the violent crowd which indulged in arson. All the accused arrested in connection with the incident have since been released on bail. The team led by CPI(M) Politburo member and former MP Hannan Mollah, which visited Khairthal, stated in its report that the police had resorted to “unprovoked firing” on a crowd, in which 25-year-old Pawan Jatav was killed and two others were injured.last_img read more

(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)With just a few weeks remaining until the College Football Playoff field is decided, the Big 12 is still up in the air. Oklahoma is the favorite to win the conference and make the four team field, but there are still scenarios in which Baylor and Oklahoma State can capture the conference crown. Three games—Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Baylor-TCU, and Baylor-Texas—will decide the conference champion. ESPN’s Max Olson tweeted out a handy, simple chart explaining all of the possible scenarios. So who wins the Big 12? Here’s the updated and much simpler chart. pic.twitter.com/o4TdzjPICH— Max Olson (@max_olson) November 22, 2015After last year’s debacle with Baylor and TCU, the Big 12 made head-to-head result the first tiebreaker to name a conference champion, so if Oklahoma wins Bedlam, it will take home the crown due to its win over Baylor. If Oklahoma State wins Bedlam, it need either TCU or Texas to knock off the Bears. Otherwise, Baylor will win the league. We’re pretty excited to see it all play out.last_img read more

Bid On Jism 2 Star Sunny Leones Lingerie For Charity

first_imgWho better than the team of the new film Jism 2 to show that there is nothing sexier than compassion for animals? Director Pooja Bhatt and co-producer Dino Morea have donated the wardrobe of Jism 2 to benefit PETA India’s homeless-dog adoption campaign and other initiatives.Costumes, including Sunny Leone’s lingerie, dresses and gowns as well as attire worn by the male actors Randeep Hooda and Arunoday Singh, will go on auction on eBay for ten days starting 3 August, the first day of the film’s release. The details of the auction can be found at PETAIndia.com.“With Jism 2 supporting PETA it’s clear, compassion for animals is super sexy”, says PETA India Chief Functionary Poorva Joshipura. “The proceeds from the auction of Jism 2’s wardrobe will go directly toward PETA’s efforts to encourage homeless dog adoption, spay and neuter and toward our other lifesaving campaigns. If you respect animals, one easy and fun way to help stop their suffering is to make a bid.”In India, tens of millions of homeless dogs struggle to survive on the streets. Many of them go hungry, are injured or killed, are hit by vehicles or are abused by cruel people. Countless others are kept in animal shelters because there aren’t enough good homes for them. Every time a dog has a litter, it means fewer homes for the dogs who are languishing in animal shelters or roaming the streets. The answer is simple: always have your dog sterilised. PETA India’s homeless-dog adoption campaign encourages all prospective dog guardians always to adopt from an animal shelter or take in a homeless animal from the streets and never to buy from a breeder or a pet shop – both of which only add to the problem. Both Leone and Morea have separately shot ads for PETA India’s homeless-dog adoption campaign. Bhatt has rescued and adopted eight dogs from the streets, and Hooda helps animals in distress. Those who wish to take part in the auction are invited to visit PETAIndia.com for details.last_img read more
