McIlroy can’t wait to get started

first_img The hype surrounding McIlroy’s attempt to join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods in winning all four major titles has been building since the night before his Open victory at Hoylake last July. And although the return of Woods to competitive action after two months on the sidelines has taken some of the spotlight off McIlroy, the world number one is anxious to let his clubs do the talking. McIlroy has recorded just one top-10 finish in six previous appearances at Augusta – last year’s tie for eighth – although he did take a four-shot lead into the final round in 2011 before collapsing to a closing 80. He admits he will have to play the par fives better to have a chance of slipping on a green jacket on Sunday, covering them in level par last year compared to eight under by champion Bubba Watson, who finished eight shots ahead. But he also believes Augusta National suits his game if he can take advantage of having a nine iron in his hands for second shots to holes like the 13th and 15th. “I think I’ve developed a game where I can compete at pretty much any golf course now. That might not have been the case two or three years ago,” McIlroy added. “But if you’re looking at the courses, Augusta’s the one that should set up the best for me just with my ball flight and being comfortable off the tee here, especially being able to turn the ball over from right to left. “If I can play the way I know I can around here and just have a good week on the greens, then there’s no reason why I shouldn’t have a good chance.” Rory McIlroy admits Thursday cannot come soon enough as he bids to complete the career grand slam by winning the Masters. Press Association “I said in the middle of last week, ‘If Augusta was to start tomorrow, I’d be okay. I’m ready,'” McIlroy said on Tuesday. “I think that’s a good indication of where I am with my game. I’ve been ready for this thing to start for a week already so just trying to keep my game where it is and do some quality work, not overdo it. “Just do the right amount so that when I got here yesterday for the first time, I was ready to play and just needed to go see the golf course. I wasn’t working on anything in my game, my swing. Wasn’t thinking about technique at all. Just all about hitting the shots I need to and thinking about how to manage my game and get it around here for the next four days. “Results-wise, the last three tournaments haven’t been what I’ve wanted. I still feel like there’s plenty of positives to take from them, especially Doral and Bay Hill, I felt like I played pretty good there. A couple silly mistakes here and there, but for the most part I felt like I got what I needed out of them. “But the last two weeks have been great. I’ve just practised at home in Florida and made another trip up here a couple of Fridays ago. “I just really felt like spending a couple of weeks away from this (media attention), I guess, and just preparing at home and in private and not really having everything critiqued and analysed and over-analysed. I just wanted to get away from it all, and I feel like it’s been a good thing.” McIlroy followed Woods into the media centre at Augusta National and admitted the presence of the 14-time major winner – who was relaxed and jovial with the press – could work in his favour. “A little bit, I guess,” the 25-year-old added. “It is such a big story, Tiger coming back at the Masters after a bit of a lengthy period where he has not been around. But still I’m just here to play golf and you guys can write the stories, I won’t read them and we’ll move on.” last_img read more

Mayweather to stage “entertainment” spectacle in Japan

first_imgLos Angeles, United States | AFP | Boxer Floyd Mayweather says his New Year’s Eve bout with Japanese kick boxer Tenshin Nasukawa will be “all about the entertainment”.The nine-minute exhibition in Japan will have no official winner or loser if it goes the distance, and Mayweather said at a press availability at his training base in Las Vegas on Thursday that he was looking forward to the event as a chance to sample “something different”.The contest will take place at the Saitama Prefecture Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, Mayweather said.Saitama is 16 kilometres (10 miles) north of Tokyo.Mayweather added that there and won’t be any judges present and the bout would not count on the combatants’ official fight records.“It is all about the entertainment,” Mayweather said. “Nine minutes of entertainment …. I’m in the entertainment business.”Besides three-minute rounds, the exhibition will take place at 67kg (147 pounds), feature “straight boxing rules” and eight-ounce boxing gloves.“This will be full contact competition but the bout is not going on boxing or MMA records,” a Mayweather spokesperson said in a news release.Nasukawa, also in Vegas Thursday, said he hopes his countrymen will get behind the show. “There has never been a Japanese fighter to face Floyd Mayweather in the ring. I would like to make a big impression,” said the 20-year-old, who is 27-0 with 21 KOs as a featherweight kickboxer.“I want to get the whole fight community, the whole country of Japan and the entire world involved in this fight.Thursday’s press event came almost a month after 41-year-old retired welterweight champ Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) announced he had scrapped plans to stage a fight with Nasukawa, indicating he had been duped into agreeing to a contest.“I want it to be clear that I, Floyd Mayweather, never agreed to an official bout with Tenshin Nasukawa,” Mayweather wrote on Instagram. But on November 15, the CEO of mixed martial arts promoter RIZIN said a “misunderstanding” with Mayweather had been ironed out and the fight was on.At that time, Mayweather described the match to TMZ Sports as “a little boxing exhibition” with no kicking involved. There was no mention Thursday of a US broadcaster, an undercard, or how much money Mayweather would receive for the spectacle.Mayweather came out of a two-year retirement in 2017 and knocked out mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor in the 10th round of a super-hyped boxing match.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Timberland Library’s Family Read Aloud Kicks Off On March 2

first_imgFacebook0Tweet0Pin0 Submitted by Timberland Regional LibraryPack up a sack of books and head to the kitchen, the living room and laundry room—even the bathroom and garage—and read some of your favorite stories aloud as a family. It’s time for the annual Timberland Regional Library (TRL) Family Read-Aloud, running from Saturday, March 2 (Dr. Seuss’s birthday) through Friday, April 12 (Beverly Cleary’s birthday). The program, now in its twelfth year, centers on the activity of families reading aloud together in different areas of their homes. As an early learning program, the Read-Aloud focuses on children from infancy to grade 3, though all of a family’s children are encouraged to join in the fun.“It’s no coincidence that we begin our read-aloud with the celebration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss and close with the celebration of the birthday of Beverly Cleary. Characters from books written by these beloved authors have become part of cherished childhood memories for many generations!” said Ellen Duffy, TRL’s Youth Services Coordinator.Families, as well as classrooms and child care providers, may pick up a Read Aloud Castle Start-up Kit at any Timberland library beginning on March 2, enter for chances to win prizes, and proceed to read in rooms all around their homes. The more rooms and spaces, the merrier. The kit includes a Read Aloud Castle on cardstock to color, a set of stickers, a Dr. Seuss bookmark, a door hanger and a prize drawing entry form. Booklists in the kits, all developed by TRL Youth Services staff include “100 Toddler Favorites,” which includes books and music, and “Books to Read Aloud,” the revised edition, featuring high appeal read-alouds for ages 3 to 12.Comments from families during last year’s Family Read-Aloud demonstrate that families enjoy and appreciate sharing books together. Specifically asked in what ways the program contributed to early learning for their children, families wrote comments such as these:Asking questions about stories and recognizing picturesBecoming more familiar with lettersHelping him to learn new wordsImproved language skillsShe is learning about storytelling and it has helped her attention spanIt has helped my child learn colors, shapes and concepts of print; rhymes and parts of a book.ImaginationAll 48 comments are listed at the end of the article, along with comments about what families enjoyed most about the program. What’s the Big Deal about Reading Aloud?“Research (and common sense) tells us that parents are the first and most important teachers of their children” said Ms. Duffy. What happens between parent and child is the best predictor of future success in school. Children who are read to from an early age develop better language skills, enhanced listening skills, larger vocabularies, and are more ready to read when they begin school. There is a tremendous body of research showing that a child’s emotional and social readiness is a strong predictor of school success. “Sitting comfortably together to share a story helps nurture the emotional bond between parent and child,” said Duffy.Recommended Books about Reading Aloud“Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever” by Mem Fox (2008 Revised Edition)“Reid’s Read-Alouds: Selections for Children and Teens” by Rob Reid (2009)“The Read-Aloud Handbook” by Jim Trelease  (any edition)PrizesEach Timberland library will award a grand prize: a backpack filled with books selected especially for the winning family or classroom. Many libraries will also have local drawings for books and other prizes during the program. Friends of the Library groups throughout the library system have generously provided many hundreds of books. Families may enjoy reading the gift book plates to see the variety of Friends groups that donated the books and their associated libraries.Complete details will be in libraries and online at www.TRL.org no later than March 2, the date when kits will be at all Timberland libraries.last_img read more

Who Will Run On Red Bank’s GOP Ticket?

first_imgBy John BurtonRED BANK – The longstanding discord among Red Bank Republicans calls into question whether an incumbent will secure her party’s nomination for the borough council race for November.Democrats have announced their candidates, selecting incumbent councilmember Kathy Horgan to run for an additional three-year term and naming attorney and current Zoning Board of Adjustment member Erik Yngstrom as her running mate for the two available seats for the November ballot.“I’m really glad we’re organized early and we have two strong candidates,” said Edward Zipprich, municipal Democratic Committee chairman and borough councilman. On the Republican side, municipal committee chairman Sean Di Somma said this week the party wouldn’t decide on its slate of two candidates until later this month. Petitions have to be filed with the municipal clerk by April 4 at 4:30 p.m.But Di Somma’s further comments calls into question as to what the committee will do about nominating Republican incumbent Cindy Burnham, whose term is up this year.Di Somma said “I personally have not endorsed Cindy Burnham,” and has no plans to. Di Somma added that the three other incumbent Republican councilmembers have not offered their support for Burnham, either. The committee has the ability to name anyone, as long as the candidate meets the residency requirement and is a registered party member. “The local committee will decide who gets the party line,” Di Somma said. And the chairman said he believes anyone seeking the nomination “should have to come before the committee and say this is why I deserve your endorsement and this is why I deserve the party line (on the official ballot),” Di Somma said. But in the real world, the committee chair is likely to have considerable sway over the selection process. Having the party ballot line is an advantage for the candidate in securing the support of party faithful, especially in a presidential election year, which traditionally will draw out more voters.Burnham said this week, whatever the municipal party decides, she is empathic that, “I’m focused on working on Red Bank and getting re-elected.”“I’m going to seek the committee’s support and I’ll see where it goes from there,” she said, leaving the door open for a possible independent run to retain her seat on the six-member borough council. “Where it goes, who knows,” she offered.Di Somma and Burnham were running mates three years ago for council seats, with Burnham succeeding. Early on in that campaign, tension developed between the two, with both of them for all purposes campaigning independently. That tension has only become more pronounced both behind the scenes and increasingly publicly, especially as Burnham continues to operate as an independent firebrand, at times criticizing the actions of her fellow GOP councilmembers and others on the governing body.Burnham, long a self-described “citizen activist,” has a long history of sparring with the previous Democratic-controlled borough council, going back before being elected. When she won in 2013, she became the first Republican to take a council seat since 2007. “I definitely revived the Republican Party,” in the borough, she maintained, and said she is “disappointed” in what appears to be lack of support in the party for her candidacy. In the last two years, with Di Somma serving as committee chair, the local GOP won a total of three council seats, holding a 4-2 majority, the party’s first majority on the council in more than two decades.last_img read more

Govt committed to ensuring “we keep our population safe from diseases” – Minister Lawrence

first_imgMinister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence yesterday reassured that her ministry is committed to implementing programmes geared towards the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS and other Communicable Diseases with the budget available.“It is the responsibility of the Ministry of the Public Health to ensure that we keep our population safe from diseases and we have been doing so in collaboration with other ministries and NGO’s,” Minister Lawrence told the Department of Public Information (DPI).Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence speaking to media operativesThe minister made this statement at the launch of a Medex training programme on Monday last. She was responding to media claims that there might be an increase of HIV/AIDS cases in the country.Minister Lawerence indicated that the number of persons with HIV/AIDS in Guyana has to be confirmed by the Ministry of Public Health’s Chief Medical Officer. She told media operatives that while she could not provide an exact figure, she will be attending a ‘preliminary’ meeting with the National AIDS Programme Secretariat (NAPS) and other public officials on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, to confirm the amount.“That number has to be confirmed. Very soon we will be putting out the Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO) report which has not been published for several years. I was made to understand there are changes in the way in which the reporting is done now – that the numbers are no longer collated together,” the minister said. She explained that due to reduced public awareness there is a belief that there may be an increase in the number of HIV/AIDS cases in Guyana. According to the Health Minister, the Non-Governmental Organisations and foreign-funded programmes were at the helm of supporting this public awareness.“It was the NGO’s who were the gatekeepers, some who are no longer existing or they are not working in wide areas as they previously did,” she said. However, despite this setback, the minister guaranteed that her ministry will continue to implement programmes to prevent and control HIV/AIDS and other Communicable Diseases.last_img read more
