Lok Sabha 2019 WhatsApp opens hotline to curb fake news in India

Close With a few days left before the first leg of the Lok Sabha 2019 elections kicks off in India, WhatsApp in collaboration with PROTO, a local media skilling startup has opened a hotline for callers to tip off the authorities about the spread of misinformation.If anybody receives suspicious messages, rumours, false information, they can call or forward the message to Checkpoint Tipline on WhatsApp +91-9643-000-888.Once a WhatsApp user shares a suspicious message with the tipline, Proto’s verification centre will validate the information, and inform the user if the claim made in a message shared is authentic or not. WhatsApp and Proto set up special Checkpoint hotline for users to report rumours, fake news in India ahead of Lok Sabha 2019 election.WhatsApp Press Kit (screen-shot)The response will indicate if the information is classified as true, false, misleading, disputed or out of scope and include any other related information that is available. This centre is capable of reviewing rumours in the form of pictures, video links or text in four regional languages such as Hindi, Telugu, Bengali and Malayalam in addition to English. PROTO is also taking the help of grassroots organizations to submit rumours circulating across different regions in India during the election period.Proto is also working with two other firms Dig Deeper Media and Meedan; the latter has developed a technology to support the verification of rumours and maintain the database of rumours that have been processed. All three in association with WhatsApp have expanded Check platform (developed for recent elections in Mexico and France) and integrated it with the WhatsApp Business API, to receive and respond to messages at a bigger scale.”The goal of this project is to study the misinformation phenomenon at scale — natively in WhatsApp. As more data flows in, we will be able to identify the most susceptible or affected issues, locations, languages, regions, and more. The verification reports we send back will encourage our grassroots-level “listening posts” to send more signals for analysis.” Following the project, PROTO plans to submit learnings to the International Center for Journalists to help other organizations learn from the design and operations of this project,” Ritvvij Parrikh and Nasr ul Hadi, Proto’s co-founders said in a statement.WhatsApp is also working with the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) Foundation announced to work on improving digital literacy among youth in the country to curb the spread of the misinformation. In the lead up to Lok Sabha elections, they are said to host training workshops for representatives from rural and urban along with roadshows across numerous educational institution.Just a day ago, WhatsApp parent company Facebook removed 687 pages and accounts affiliated with IT cell of Indian National Congress (INC) over mispresenting facts about the ruling party.Besides Congress, Facebook removed pages affiliated to Indian IT firm Silver Touch and Pakistan-based website for engaging in coordinated inauthentic behaviour on Facebook and Instagram in IndiaIt can be noted that the upcoming Lok Sabha election is world’s biggest democratic exercise, with more than 900 million eligible citizens are waiting to cast the vote to choose the next prime minister of the country.The general election is being conducted in seven phases, which kicks off from April 11 and continue till May 19, whereas the counting of votes will be held on May 23.last_img read more

Child rape suspect killed in gunfight

first_img.A man, suspected of being involved in the murder of an eight-year-old girl, was killed in an alleged gunfight in Kholadanga area of Jashore early Wednesday, reports UNB.Police identified the deceased as Shamim, 30, a resident of the area.Kotwali police station’s in-charge Apurba Hasan said they sent a team to Kholadanga around 3:00am after being tipped off that two gangs of drug traders were engaged in a gunfight.”The police team came under fire as soon as it reached the spot,” the OC said.Police also claimed to have recovered a shutter gun and 50 yaba pills.Shamim was a suspect in the murder of schoolgirl Trisha. Her body was found in a sack in a ditch behind the house of a neighbour at Dharmatala on Monday evening, a day after she went missing.Police said they suspect the child was raped before she was killed.A case was filed in this connection.The law enforcement’s version of the event was, however, not verified independently as no version of that incident was available immediately either from any witnesses or from any members of the suspect’s family.last_img read more

Not amused by FB photo college suspends six

first_imgOne boy and five girl students of a college here have been suspended by its management after a photo of theirs emerged on social media showing the boy lying on the lap of the girls in their classroom. The matter, which the college said has “created emotional outbursts” amongst the student community, has also seen the boy being thrashed by unknown persons, leading to his hospitalisation.Also, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarti Parishad members have submitted a memorandum to the college’s principal asking him to debar the students after the photo, according to sources at the college, was uploaded on Facebook on February 22 and went viral online.”The incident, the photo and its circulation on social media has created emotional outbursts among the student community and the public,” the college, which is situated at Suratkal here, said in a letter to Mangalore University.The boy was thrashed by a group of people on Sunday after the photo appeared on Facebook and he has been admitted to a hospital for treatment, police said.last_img read more

first_imgDarjeeling: An eight-year-old boy was found hanging at his residence on Monday in Belakoba inJalpaiguri district.The incident occurred at Mudipara. The deceased, Firoz Mohammad, was a student of Class 3 in a primary school located in the vicinity of his house.On Monday, Khairul Mohammad (father of the deceased) reached home around noon and found his sons to be at home.He had then scolded his sons for skipping schools.His eldest and youngest son then left for school but Firoz stayed back.Later, his family members found him hanging from the ceiling.They brought him down and rushed him to Belakoba Hospital where he was declared brought dead.Police have started investigating the case.The body was sent for an autopsy at Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital.last_img read more

Her sentencing will take place on Dec. 13, 2018.She previously pleaded guilty in 2016 to five counts of operating without registration. She is currently on a probation order with respect to the first offences that requires her to pay $13,904.96 in restitution by Jan. 17, 2020, as well as perform 200 hours community service.
