K Line MOL NYK to Join Forces in Container Shipping

first_imgzoom Japan’s big three container shipping companies have agreed to establish a new joint-venture company to integrate their container shipping businesses. After the resolution by the board of directors of each company held today, and subject to regulatory approval from the authorities, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) will establish the new company which will, besides the container shipping businesses, include worldwide terminal operating businesses excluding Japan. The new joint-venture company would operate a fleet totaling 1.4 million TEUs, placing the new company as sixth in the market with approximately 7% of global share.K Line and MOL, which will each hold 31 percent, and their compatriot NYK Line, which will hold the remaining 38 percent, plan to establish the new joint-venture company on July 1, 2017, while business commencement is expected to start as of April 1, 2018.The parties opted for the move to ensure future stable, efficient and competitive business operations in the container shipping industry, which has struggled in recent years due to a decline in the container growth rate and the rapid influx of newly built vessels. These two factors have contributed to an imbalance of supply and demand, destabilizing the industry and creating an environment that is adverse to container line profitability. In order to combat these factors, industry participants have sought to gain scale merit through mergers and acquisitions and consequently the structure of the industry is changing through consolidation.last_img read more

Fleetscape Raises USD 400 Mn of Capital

first_imgzoom Capital provider to the maritime industry Fleetscape Capital Holdings Limited (Fleetscape) has collected USD 400 million in its first investment capital raise. The capital was raised from funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management, Fleetscape said.“With this capital raise, Fleetscape has become one of the leading alternative capital providers to the maritime industries with a global investment mandate,” the company commented.Fleetscape is targeting investments across various segments of the maritime space, including shipping and offshore, by providing leases, loans and preferred equity. As explained, the strong investor appetite shown in Fleetscape’s fund raising reflects the realisation that access to capital in the maritime industry has been restricted over the past several years.“There has been a fundamental shift in the way that this capital-intensive industry funds itself, with alternative structured capital providers becoming an integral and substantial part of funding commitments,” Fleetscape further noted.“We are well positioned to become the preferred source for solution-oriented alternative capital provision to shipping and offshore services companies worldwide,” C. Tobias Backer of Fleetscape said.“We believe that a favourable investment climate exists for our alternative credit strategy, as the maritime sector continues to suffer from the retrenchment of its traditional capital sources. By combining Oaktree’s deep history of investing in the maritime space and our experience in structuring tailor-made transactions, we believe that Fleetscape will be a leading creative, flexible and innovative investment partner for the shipping and offshore industries for the long-term,” Guillaume Bayol, Senior Vice President at Oaktree, said.last_img read more

ATSB Improper Lookout Led to Collision off Victoria

first_imgzoomIllustration; Image Courtesy: Hapag-Lloyd The containership Glasgow Express and fishing vessel Mako collided in August 2017 off Victoria because a proper lookout was not being maintained on either vessel, Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said in a report. The vessels collided on the evening of August 12 some 15 nautical miles south of Cape Woolamai, Victoria. Both vessels had been on settled courses and speeds for at least 2 hours before the collision.Despite both crews detecting and monitoring the other vessel, both vessels maintained their courses until they collided.Glasgow Express’s bridge team saw and monitored Mako visually, however, a full appraisal of the situation using other instruments or means available on the bridge, such as radar, was not done. As a consequence, the situation was misinterpreted and the risk of collision was not identified.Additionally, a proper lookout was not maintained on board Mako. In particular, radar was not effectively used, and little if any visual sightings were conducted after it was incorrectly assessed that Glasgow Express was passing clear. An inspection in Melbourne identified scratch marks on Glasgow Express from Mako’s stabiliser arm, about 50 m aft of the bow on the starboard side. No other damage was found. At the time, the 54,157 dwt containership, operated by Hapag-Lloyd, was passing Cape Liptrap heading north-west. The ship was bound for Melbourne, Victoria, and was maintaining a steady course and speed.Following the incident, Glasgow Express’ operator undertook a fleet-wide information and education program which outlined the incident and emphasised the need to use all available means to maintain safe navigation in accordance with the collision regulations.last_img read more

Province Receives Preliminary Recommendations on Cobequid Pass

first_imgThe province has received preliminary recommendations from Opus International on the Cobequid Pass safety review. Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Murray Scott ordered the review after a large number of vehicles were stranded on the pass during a severe winter storm in November. “Over the coming weeks, we will review the recommendations, and develop action plans and budgets,” said Mr. Scott. “These recommendations will serve as an important tool as we continue to take steps to improve winter safety on, not only the Cobequid Pass, but all roads in our province.” The report made recommendations in a number of areas such as communication with motorists, road signs and markers, road closure implementation and maintenance operations. They include ensuring that each year all equipment and personnel assigned to winter maintenance activities on the pass are mobilized by Nov. 1, investigating the possibility of issuing web alerts to subscribers by text message to alert them of changing road conditions or closures, ensuring up to date weather information is available at the toll booths, providing additional maintenance crossovers to improve access to stuck vehicles, and conducting a user survey to determine the need for rest areas and facilities. In addition to the safety review, immediate steps that have already been taken include installing CB radios on plows on the Cobequid Pass, adding digital signs to inform motorists of adverse weather, and assembling emergency kits that could be distributed to stranded drivers. The preliminary recommendations are available online at www.gov.ns.ca/tran . The full report is expected by the end of January.last_img read more

Nova Scotias Children Need Foster Parents

first_imgNova Scotians are encouraged to open their hearts and their homes by becoming foster parents as part of foster family recruitment week which begins Sunday, April 19. “The children that come into care are good kids who, for a variety of reasons, need to be removed from their current home,” said Community Services Minister Chris d’Entremont. “Foster parents play a vital role in protecting these children and place them in a safe and loving home until a more permanent solution is found.” Children who have been placed in the province’s care need foster homes to provide love and support through difficult periods in their lives. There are about 800 foster families in Nova Scotia. The recruitment campaign is targeting families who can offer a safe home as well as hope and encouragement to a child. “Our children deserve to be safe and well cared for, and I hope that more families will consider opening their home to a child in need,” said Mr. d’Entremont. Foster parents attend training sessions on a variety of subjects, including how to support children who have special needs, non-violent crisis intervention, and how best to prepare and support a child or youth in their care. Foster parents also receive daily compensation to help with the costs of caring for a child or youth. “When you become a foster parent, you become a member of our team,” said Vicki Black, manager of Foster Care. “We are here to provide the support needed to make our children feel loved and safe.” Foster Family Recruitment Week runs April 19-25. The Department of Community Services is promoting a provincewide recruitment campaign that includes print, radio, and online advertising.

Investor Alert for Balboa International

first_imgThe Nova Scotia Securities Commission is alerting investors that Balboa International is not registered to sell securities in the province. At least one Nova Scotia investor was contacted by telephone by a representative of this company and solicited to invest in gold options. Trading in options can involve a lot of risk and any person considering options should seek professional advice from a registered firm or representative before investing. Balboa International appears to be related to Balboa Forex, and both appear to be based out of Costa Rica. The Nova Scotia Securities Commission issued an Investor Alert on Sept. 12 warning investors about Balboa Forex. Some red flags to watch and listen for when you are approached about any investment are: the offer or promise of very high returns, such as 10 per cent a month or the ability to double your money in a short time zero risk or impossible to lose investments pressure to make quick, on-the-spot decisions the company and the representative are not registered to trade in securities and shy away from or deflect answering questions about needing to be registered The commission urges Nova Scotians to exercise extreme caution when dealing with firms that are not registered in Nova Scotia. It is illegal to solicit investments in Nova Scotia without registering with the commission and complying with securities laws. To see if a company or person is registered, you can check the Canadian Securities Administrators’ National Registration Search. If people are contacted about these types of investments, they are urged to contact the commission to talk to an investigator or to report a scam. Prepare young girls for first period

first_imgBollywood film Pad Man has opened up discussions around menstruation, but there’s still a long way to go. It’s important for young girls to be aware of periods before their first one, advise experts. According to a survey conducted recently, menstruation is no more a hush-hush topic. The survey had participation from 2,400 women – working women in the age group of 25-35 years – from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. As many as 67.7 per cent of women believe that popular Bollywood movie made people talk about menstruation openly. Also Read – Pollution makes you more aggressiveExperts say a girl must be prepared for their first period. Here’s what experts suggest how to make your daughter’s first period comfortable: *Tell her not to shy away from periods: Repeat this as many times as you can – ‘periods are not a taboo’. While pregnancy is celebrated in India, periods are treated in a hush-hush manner. It’s about time we break out of this regressive socio-cultural mindset. The next generation should be that of the trailblazers who finally break the shackles and speak out freely about menstruation. Also Read – Physical therapy better for low back painMake sure it’s an impactful and an empowering one, for she might be the one who changes the way women perceive their periods. In doing so, she might just change the world! *We bleed red, not blue: Leading brands that use blue ink to depict period blood are essentially attaching a message of shame to periods. Let your daughter know that we bleed red, and that there’s no need to be ashamed of it. Periods should no longer be a secret between moms and daughters but can and should be discussed with brothers and dads too. *Personal hygiene is very important during this time: Tampons and pads must be changed every 4-8 hours depending on the flow. And she must wash herself every time she uses the washroom, and keep herself clean since menstrual blood can lead to infection and bad odour. During the period, it is easier to contract bacterial infections or vaginitis. *Disposal of sanitary products must be taught to your young one: It’s important to wrap it in a newspaper and dispose this in the bin rather than flushing it down. *Different women experience period pains at different intensities: Tell her this is part of a normal growing up process. There may be cramps, backache, thigh pain and headaches that may happen. You should opt for herbal period pain patches that discreetly yet effectively soothe the cramps. Exercising may also help to take care of all this. *Make her comfortable: Comfort her by telling not be scared of ‘leaking’ and if it happens, she can just throw that underwear panty away and use a fresh one. Also, apprise her that other girls in her class are also going through similar changes and they can watch each other’s backs. *You can run, jump and even swim if you want to: Tell your daughters that they don’t have to shy away from pursuing their passions even during those days of the month. With new innovative feminine hygiene solutions, girls can run, jump, swim and exercise without worrying about stains.last_img read more

Mamata changes FB Twitter DPs to Jai Hind Jai Bangla

first_imgKolkata: Days after losing her cool on BJP activists chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and front ranking leaders of her Trinammol Congress changed their display picture on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to ‘Jay Hind, Jay Bangla on Sunday night. Earlier in the day, Banerjee in a detailed Facebook post accused the BJP of mixing religion with politics and urged people to deter any sort of chaos and unrest. Also Read – City bids adieu to Goddess Durga The picture of Trinamool’s official Twitter and Facebook accounts also were changed to ‘Jay Hind, Jay Bangla’ with pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, revolutionary leaders Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Matangini Hazra, Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore, and rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Photos of leading 19th century Bengal Renaissance figures like Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, as also religious and social thinker Swami Vivekananda and father of Indian Constitution B R Ambedkar were also part of the new display pictures. Also Read – Centuries-old Durga Pujas continue to be hit among revellers Banerjee and other Trinamool leaders had changed their social media DPs to display a photo of Vidyasagar, after a bust of the venerated champion of women’s emancipation was demolished in connection with unrest related to BJP chief Amit Shah’s election roadshow in Kolkata last month. “Jai Sia Ram, Jai Ram ji ki, Ram Naam Satya hai etc. have religious and social connotations. We respect these sentiments. But BJP is using religious slogan Jai Sri Ram as their party slogan in a misconceived manner by way of mixing religion with politics,” Banerjee wrote in her Facebook post. “We do not respect this forcible enforcement of political slogans on others in the name of so-called RSS which Bengal never accepted. This is a deliberate attempt to sell hatred ideology through vandalism and violence which we must oppose together”. Clarifying that she has no issues with any party slogan, she wrote: “I have no problem, regarding any particular slogan of political parties in their rallies, and for their party purpose. Every political party has their own slogan. My party has Jai Hind, Vande Mataram. The Left has Inquilab Zindabad. Others have different slogans. We respect each other.” The Trinamool Congress supremo said one cannot “fool” the people all the time. She warned everyone against divisiveness being spread in Bengal. “This is high time that proper action is taken to restrain political workers not to indulge in activities of creating unrest, chaos, violence and disruption of normal life by taking recourse to misplaced ideologies in the so-called name of religion to create a divide among the people. If all other political parties start resorting to these sort of divisive and disruptive activities, then the entire environment would become highly vitiated and counterproductive,” she said. She urged people to oppose such moves of BJP very strongly in order to keep the secular character of the country as enshrined in the Constitution. “I appeal to all the people of the country and the state to give a befitting reply to hatred politics and show respect to our country’s glorious culture and heritage. Let us all be proud of our culture and heritage. Jai Hind, Jai Bangla, Joyo He,” Banerjee added. She said BJP is trying to spread ideology of hatred through a section of the media. “The so-called BJP media and so-called fake video, fake news, misinformation and disinformation to create confusion and to suppress truth and reality,” she wrote.last_img read more
